October 1, 2020 – On August 16, 2020, King’s College held its virtual 2020 Commencement Ceremony, which celebrated 549 graduates, conferring 412 undergraduate degrees and 137 master’s degrees. The graduates honored included those who finished their programs in December of 2019 through those who completed their work this summer. The video debuted on the College’s YouTube channel and was viewed by thousands of people around the world, including the graduates, their families, and friends.
A pre-recorded invocation was made by The Most Reverend Joseph C. Bambera, D.D., J.C.L., Bishop of the Diocese of Scranton. A formal stage was set up in Scandlon Gymnasium to accommodate administrators and honored guests who spoke to the Class of 2020 prior to the name and photo of each graduate being displayed one by one on the video. The stage party included King’s President Rev. John Ryan, C.S.C., Ph.D., Honorary Degree Recipient Rabbi Larry Kaplan, Board President Mr. Thomas R. Smith ’77, and members of the College’s senior leadership team. All participants in the stage party were spaced more than six feet apart and wore masks unless they were speaking at the podium.
Rabbi Kaplan’s remarks to the graduates addressed the chaotic nature of the year 2020: a global pandemic, economic uncertainty, and civil unrest. In the presence of hate, Rabbi Kaplan cited the Bible’s command to “set straight the person who is doing wrong, or even thinking wrong in your estimation, but don’t bring about further wrongdoing because of it.” Kaplan blessed the graduates, saying, “May this crazy way of graduating, which in a way is also a blessing of course, bring about healing of all kinds, both physical and emotional, from virus to injustice.”
Following Rabbi Kaplan’s remarks, King’s College Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Joseph Evan, Ph.D. ’95 conferred master and bachelor’s degrees upon the approved candidates. He also conferred honorary doctoral degrees upon Rabbi Kaplan, James Gilmartin ’62, and John Moses, Esq. ’68.
The presentation of the graduates showcased each student’s name, photo, degree, and any additional accolades or awards that they earned. After the presentation of the graduates, faculty awards were presented to: Beth Admiraal, Ph.D., Professor of Political Science, Hevre A. LeBlanc Distinguished Service Professorship; Todd Gutekunst, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Mathematics, Max and Tillie Rosenn Award for Teaching Excellence; Gregory Janik, Ph.D., Clinical Professor of Sports Medicine, The Father Frank J. O’Hara Distinguished Service Professorship; Marc Marchese, Ph.D., Professor of Human Resources Management, The Rev. Donald J. Grimes, C.S.C. Award for Service-Learning Teaching Excellence.
Six alumni were also honored as recipients of the 2020 Alumni Awards. The honorees included: James B. Post, MD ’92, Alumni Award for Outstanding Professional Achievement in Arts & Sciences; Gary L. Neilson ’75, Alumni Award for Outstanding Professional Achievement in Business; Paul Psak ’07, The Robert J. Ell Alumni Award for Outstanding service to Alma Mater; Thomas Brady, MD ’68, Alumni Award for Service to Society; Edward Nardell, MD ’68, Alumni Award for Service to Society; and Amy Gravino ’05, The Leo Award.
