On April 29th, students from the Marketing Management of Multinational Corporations course at King’s College participated in a community service project with Volunteers of America (VOA) at a housing location in Wilkes-Barre.  The students worked on improving the apartment complex through deck staining, mulch bed maintenance, and general property clean-up to support the VOA's Master Leasing ProgramStudent volunteer shoveling mulch at the VOA site.

The goal of the project was to raise awareness about housing insecurity in the local area and to foster a deeper understanding of the challenges some community members face. In just two hours, the students exceeded expectations, completing more work than VOA staff had anticipated.

JC Blewitt, King’s business professor and course instructor, shares his purpose for organizing the service project:

“I try to incorporate a service project into as many classes as possible. Students should know what’s going on in the local community and understand the struggles that some people face. Doing a service project with VOA is a great way to gain knowledge and do some good.”

Volunteers of America is a national nonprofit providing a wide range of services to support individuals and families in need, serving more than 2 million people annually across the U.S.

As a key institution in Wilkes-Barre, King’s College embraces its role in promoting local responsibility. Through hands-on service experiences, students not only gain practical insights but also help strengthen the community.
