Graduates of the King’s College Class of 2025 today received their bachelor’s, master’s, and—for the first time ever—doctoral degrees before a crowd of more than 3,000 family, friends, and faculty during the 76th annual Commencement at the Mohegan Arena at Casey Plaza.

This year’s event included the first three graduates receiving a Doctor of Occupational Therapy from the College’s first doctoral program, which operates out of the new Frank and Carolyn Kowalski Center for Advanced Healthcare Education that opened Fall 2024 in downtown Wilkes-Barre.

Former Notre Dame president Fr. Jenkins giving the keynote address.

University of Notre Dame’s 17th president, Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C., Ph.D.—who served 19 years before returning to teaching and ministry in 2024—delivered the commencement address. As part of the ceremony, Father Jenkins also received an honorary Doctor of Humanities in recognition of his extensive service to the Holy Cross mission that Notre Dame shares with King’s College.

“It is natural to speak not simply of King’s College and Notre Dame University, but of the King’s family, the Notre Dame family,” said Father Jenkins. “The bonds go beyond simply being at a school. There is a palpable joy in coming together, doing the work we do, and achieving what we achieve together.”

“Economic study after study have shown that a college education for someone who has the ability and is willing to do the work is one of the best and most reliable investments you can make,” he continued. “It gives you the skills that enable you to earn a living. But it also makes you who you are…education, particularly at a place like King’s, shapes your soul.”

This year’s event also featured remarks from class president, Jordyn Bortz, of Bath, Pa., who received a Bachelor of Science in Biology. She is a member of the King’s Programming Board, a Holy Cross Experience co-leader, and the softball team manager. In addition to pursuing a health science career, Bortz will continue her studies in the College’s Master of Science in Healthcare Administration program.

“Standing here today, looking out at all of you—I know this much is true: we are ready,” said Bortz. “Ready to face whatever comes next. Ready to dream bigger, reach higher, and move forward with courage and heart. Because we’ve already proven we can overcome uncertainty. We’ve adapted, we’ve grown, we’ve struggled—and we’ve come out stronger on the other side.”

During today’s event, King’s College board member Richard Abbas Alley, M.D., also received an honorary Doctor of Humanities in recognition of his decades of service as a compassionate physician and his volunteer work with several Northeastern Pennsylvania community organizations and humanitarian projects in Africa, South America, and Asia.

Ray Kane, of Silver Spring, Md., an alumnus from the College’s first graduating class in 1950, was also honored during today’s ceremony, which marks the 75th anniversary of his commencement.

The event concluded with remarks from Rev. Thomas P. Looney, C.S.C., Ph.D., president of King’s College.

“The name of King’s College on your diploma is testimony that you have been educated at an institution that promotes moral values, service to others, and the common good of humankind,” said Father Looney. “And that is no small thing for the world needs leaders and citizens with a moral compass, who are committed to serving others and who promote justice that leads to peace. The world needs you.”

Additional remarks and prayers were offered by Thomas R. Smith ’77, chair of the board of King’s College, and The Most Reverend Joseph C. Bambera, D.D., J.C.L., Bishop of the Diocese of Scranton. Joseph Evan, Ph.D. ’95, provost and vice president for academic affairs, conferred the degrees.

Listed below are the degrees conferred and the individuals eligible to graduate at the time of this release.
