April 22, 2020 - The First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association (FCSLA) donated $12,000 to King’s College’s Chapel of Christ the King at the George and Giovita Maffei Family Commons. The donation was approved at the 42nd Quadrennial National Convention of the FCSLA in Tampa, Fl. In addition, locally, The Magdalen I. Iskra District of the FCSLA, Senior Branch 172, has pledged an additional $11,500 and Senior Branch 615 has donated $1,500 to name the Our Lady of Sorrows Life Size Icon in the Chapel.
Located on the northern edge of campus, this Church was officially entered in the National Register of Historic Places in 2017. Thoughtful renovations preserved the history and beauty of this iconic building and transformed this historic Church into the new home for the College’s Chapel in September 2019, creating a place for students and local residents to worship together in the Catholic and Holy Cross tradition.
King's College has had a special relationship with the Slovak community for many decades. When deciding on a patron for the Congregation of Holy Cross, founder Blessed Basil Moreau chose Mary, Our Lady of Sorrows, also the Patroness of Slovakia. The investment in this historic landmark, a guiding light watching over the campus, provides the community with a beautiful and meaningful place to gather and honor King’s identity as an institution that is proudly Catholic and Holy Cross.
