Adult Basic ESL Program
The McGowan Hispanic Outreach Program initiated an ESL program for adult learners, recognizing the need among the parents of the high school students and the many Latino families living and working around King’s College. The program meets four times a week for sixteen weeks in the fall and spring semesters. Ninety percent of the adult learners are Latino, but we do accept other language learners (e.g. Vietnamese, Russians, Pakistanis, etc.). There is regularly a waiting list of 25 to 40 people each semester for the start of the next classes.
ESL: English as a Second Language is a basic non-credit program that runs from Monday-Thursday from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Students are given a diagnostic test in order to be placed in the correct level according to their English proficiency. One night a week (usually Thursday nights) is devoted to conversation, where King’s students who volunteer to work with the students work off of a lesson plan drawn up by the teacher.
For new students the cost of $550 per person covers the materials that are used in the course, and it can be paid in the form of a check, money order, or cash. For returning students the cost is $385.
Citizenship preparation is offered if/when there is a large need among the ESL students. If a course is offered, it will meet once a week for 11-12 weeks. Citizenship preparation is a Civics Class taught to prepare students with the updated version of the 128 questions they have to review for the test. The cost of the citizenship preparation program is $75.
Programa Básico de ESL Para Adultos
El Programa de Asistencia a la Comunidad Latina de McGowan inicio un programa de ESL para estudiantes adultos, reconociendo la necesidad entre los padres de los estudiantes de preparatoria y las significantes familias latinas que viven y trabajan alrededor de King’s College. El programa se reúne cuatro veces a la semana por 16 semanas durante el semestre del otoño y la primavera. Noventa por ciento de los estudiantes son Latinos, pero también aceptamos estudiantes de otros idiomas (ex: Vietnamese, Russians, Pakistanis, etc.). Usualmente hay una lista de espera de 25 a 40 personas cada semestre para el inicio de las próximas clases.
ESL: Inglés Como Segundo Idioma es un programa sin créditos básico que se lleva acabo de lunes a jueves de 7:00 p.m. para 8:30 p.m. Los estudiantes reciben una prueba diagnóstica para ser colocados en el nivel correcto de acuerdo a su dominio del inglés. Una noche a la semana (normalmente jueves por la noche) se dedica a conversación, en la cual Estudiantes de King’s que se ofrecen voluntariamente para trabajar con los alumnos trabajan fuera de un plan de clase elaborado por el profesor(a).
Para nuevos estudiantes el costo de $550 por persona cubre los materiales que se utilizan en el curso y se puede pagar en forma de cheque, giro postal o efectivo. Para estudiantes que regresan el costo es de $385.
Preparación para la ciudadanía se ofrece si / cuando hay una gran necesidad entre los estudiantes de ESL. Si se ofrece el curso, se reunirá una vez por semana durante 11-12 semanas. Preparación para la ciudadanía es una clase que prepara a los estudiantes con las 128 preguntas que tienen que repasar para el examen. El costo es de $75.
