How did you select your Study/Intern Abroad location?

As a freshman I attended Dr. Scarboro’s class where he mentioned study abroad in Bulgaria a few times but at that point I did not take interest in it. It was not until the end of a sophomore year when a coworker of mine mentioned the trip and I decided to go. I have wanted to go to Turkey for years now so it was amazing that I got the opportunity to study abroad in Turkey and also Bulgaria.

Why did you want to study or intern abroad?

I wanted to study abroad because it is a once in a lifetime opportunity to get to go to beautiful countries and make friends you will have for a lifetime.

What were the highlights of this experience?

Some of the highlights of my trip include going to the beautiful cities in Bulgaria such as Veliko Turnovo, Plovdiv, Nesebar, and Sunny Beach. We got to go to the Buzludzha Monument; we also got to see some of the most amazing sites in Bulgaria. In Turkey, we went to Istanbul and Bursa and we got to see some of the most spectacular mosques, the Whirling Dervishes, the Grand Bazar, and the Spice Bazar.

What surprised you the most?

What surprised me the most in Bulgaria is that most people did not speak English but as soon as we went to “touristy” Sunny Beach everyone did. It surprised me because I felt as though that was not Bulgaria and I was not submerged in the authenticity or the culture.

How has (or how might) this experience affect your major and future career?

As a future teacher, it will help me have a different view on ESL students and it will help me teach my students better about other countries.

What would you tell students considering studying or interning abroad?

I would tell students who are considering studying abroad that it is the most amazing thing you could do. If you are able to afford it, I say go for it. I have made some amazing friends and amazing memories that I will cherish forever. I am hoping to study abroad again next year because we are young and it is our time to go and experience the world.
