How did you select your Study/Intern Abroad location?

My study abroad experience was selected primarily on the influence of professors.  I had heard about it and was interested, but they stressed how influential it would be to my learning experience; and they were right.

Why did you want to study or intern abroad?

I wanted to be part of another culture even if it was for only a short time.  The lives of other people are so interesting, and it was great to be able to see it firsthand.

What were the highlights of this experience?

Seeing the Fe y Alegria school and interacting with the children, while at the same time learning about the challenges facing their country.  It was amazing to see how the Church affected the people and their lives.

What surprised you the most?

It really surprised me how interested the children were in the United States and in my personal life.  They asked all about my family and how many siblings I had,  if I was married and if I was still in school.  They wanted to absorb my culture while I was submerged in theirs.

How has (or how might) this experience affect your major and future career?

It solidified my choice to work with underpriveleged children; it also gave me confidence in adding sociology as a major.

What would you tell students considering studying or interning abroad?
