Student Activities
Mission Statement
Student Activities at King's offers a variety of experiences and opportunities
which enhance the over-all quality of life among all the members of the
college community. By providing such a rich variety of experiences, Student
Activities assists in the development of a social vitality within the
college community through creative interaction among students, staff,
faculty, and members of the local community.
Through staff and faculty advisement, our students are challenged to develop
a set of "living principles" and values as they explore self-directed
activities that provide opportunities for self-realization and growth
in individual and group settings.
The Student Activities program includes social, cultural, intellectual,
recreational, governance, leadership, and group development, campus and
community service, and lectures and concert programs. As such, Student
Activities may be planned and implemented through collaborative efforts
by students and staff members, or by staff members alone. Through such
an extensive program students and student organizations are thereby exposed
to various cultures and experiences, ideas and issues, art and musical
forms, and styles of life.
The scope of student activities is broad because classroom instruction
is reinforced and academic learning is complemented through a variety
of co-curricular experiences. Students are provided opportunities for
increased group participation and interaction, while realizing all the
more the responsibilities of being an active member of a group.
The Student Activities program is designed to enhance the development
of leadership qualities in all students - those who hold formal leadership
positions as well as those who do not. Students are assisted in the development
of their leadership competence through opportunities to practice leadership,
decision-making, and other related skills. A conscious focus is made on
the values of equity, social justice, self-knowledge, personal empowerment,
collaboration, citizenship, and service.
THOMAS A. SHEEHY,
C.S.C.-DONALD FARMER, Ph.D. CAMPUS CENTER
The Sheehy-Farmer Campus Center is a multi-functional facility, which
serves all members of the College community. The Student Center which
was built in 1970 with three floors, in 2001 was renovated and a fourth
floor added. It is named for the Rev. Thomas Sheehy, C.S.C. and Donald
Farmer, Ph.D., C.R. Rev. Thomas A. Sheehy, C.S.C., for whom the building
was originally named in 1970, came to King's in 1953 as registrar and
ended his seventeen-year career as dean of students. With the renovation
and expansion of the campus center in 2001, the name of Dr. Donald Farmer
was added. Dr. Farmer served the College for thirty-three years as director
of the honors program, professor of history, director of planning and
as vice president and dean for academic affairs. Dr. Farmer's name is
synonymous with King's College's academic excellence and advancement in
liberal education. The naming of the Campus Center for Rev. Sheehy and
Dr. Farmer represents the integration of academic life and student life
in a facility that aims to bring together the college community.

The Kilburn Room
Art Gallery is located adjacent to the lobby of the Sheehy-Farmer Campus
Center. It is an art gallery for displaying the talent of local and national
artists. "Meet the Artist" receptions are held in this room
that provides an opportunity for informal exchanges with the visiting
artists, as well as residency programs in conjunction with the Experiencing
the Arts program.
Since this room is primarily a gallery, requests to use it when there
is an exhibition taking place in the gallery are made directly to the
director of student activities. When sculpture is being exhibited, no
other event may take place. After approval has been given to hold an event
in the gallery, the sponsor of the event is responsible for safeguarding
the exhibit. (This is to insure that no vandalism or theft takes place.)
After the event is over, the sponsor will make certain the gallery is
locked.
During the time the gallery is open for an exhibition a student aide will
be on duty in the gallery from noon - 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday,
and 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. When the student aide is
unable to be in the gallery, the student aide at the Sheehy-Farmer Campus
Center Desk will oversee gallery traffic.

EXPERIENCING THE ARTS
- A multifaceted series of culturally-enriching experiences
The series draws from a wealth of local and international artists and
performers who participate in residencies in the visual and performing
arts, as well as display exhibits of painting, sculpture, textiles, photography,
and other media. Students have enjoyed thoroughly one-person plays and
the talents of pianists, guitarists, violists, cellists, and other musicians
of the folk, classical, and contemporary genre.
Students' work takes center stage in the performance of their own works
of art in the Open Readings sponsored by the student fine arts organization,
The Campion Society. The main focus is on the literary arts, including
drama, verse, poetry, and prose. With members of the Campion Society you
have an opportunity to attend extraordinary performances of the Northeastern
Pennsylvania Philharmonic at the nearby F. M. Kirby Center for the Performing
Arts, as well as a variety of wonderful plays, concerts, and other Kirby
performances.
From children's theatre to the classics, students in the King's theatre
department have the opportunity and the talent to do it all. King's is
the only area theatre group to regularly offer classical works by such
playwrights as Shakespeare, Moliere, and Shaw. In addition, annual programs
in children's theatre are offered. Over the years, all students have the
opportunity to take part in these outstanding productions.
Cafe Cinema is proof that great things happen when the five area colleges
get together in the name of the arts! Cafe Cinema is designed to make
movie viewing an interactive experience, allowing the audience to meet
and converse with filmmakers about the creative process in producing critically-acclaimed,
independently-released films. At the F. M. Kirby Center for the Performing
Arts, the films are preceded by coffee and desserts, and followed by a
question and answer period with the film's director or another major figure
in the film's production.
Ballet Northeast provides qualified young local dancers with the opportunity
to perform regularly in challenging authentically choreographed works
in association with guest professional artists. Our students have performed
in these productions. If you want to experience the beauty of such classical
ballet productions as The Nutcracker, student discount tickets will be
made available through the student activities office.
Four times a year you have the unique opportunity to enjoy classical music
played on early period instruments by The Four Nations Ensemble, a New
York based group who are adjunct faculty members of King's College as
performing artists-in-residence. Each year this chamber music group invites
an outstanding array of talented guests to perform with them. During the
three-day residency programs, you are invited to classes in the Kilburn
Room Gallery, a noon-day concert followed by lunch, and a gala evening
performance.
During the academic year four exhibits are displayed in the Kilburn Room
Gallery, located on the main level of the Sheehy-Farmer Campus Center
to provide you with a truly rich experience in the visual arts! Outstanding
members of the art department at Marywood College share their work with
us, as well as other talented area artists. The traditional all-college
photography and other media exhibit is an opportunity for you and other
members of the college community to share your artistic talents with all
of us. "Meet the Artist" receptions, which include gallery walk,
take place during the first week of each exhibit.
Each spring the Fine Arts Fiesta, the oldest full-scale, multidisciplinary
arts festival in Pennsylvania, takes place on Public Square in downtown
Wilkes-Barre. You have the opportunity to take part in a festival which
features a continuous performing arts schedule, children's specialties,
community art displays, juried adult and student art exhibitions, an artists'
market, and traditional festival foods!
SCHEDULING STUDENT
EVENTS
AND RESERVING CAMPUS FACILITIES
In order to promote cooperation collaboration among student groups and
prevent scheduling conflict that would reduce the effectiveness of the
student activities program, the coordinator of student activities coordinates
the scheduling of all events planned by classes, and clubs/organizations.
Wherever possible, events that are of interest to the entire college community
should not be held at conflicting times. This pertains especially to major
all college events and fund-raising projects.
