Athletics Department
Mission Statement
The King's College Athletics Department, as part of a college with roots
in the Holy Cross tradition of education, commits itself to the comprehensive
development of the student. In so doing it seeks to strengthen the integration
of objectives and programs in athletics with academic and developmental
objectives, and to assure the integration of athletics and academics.
In addition to physical and academic development, the Athletics Department
promotes principles of character development within the framework of an
abiding and broadened commitment to community.
To that end, the college places special importance on the impact of athletics
on the participants rather than on spectators and greater emphasis on
the internal constituency than on the general public and its entertainment
needs. The college intends to create an atmosphere that enables the individuals
to compete primarily for the love and enjoyment of sport and not solely
for extrinsic awards. It does require that King's College provide the
means and encouragement for each person to develop according to his or
her own interests and abilities, whether at the recreational, intercollegiate,
or intramural level.
The purpose of the
King's College athletic program is to provide an opportunity for all members
of the King's College community (students, faculty, and staff) to participate
in a multitude of enjoyable, beneficial, and satisfying experiences by
offering a competitive program of sports that will meet a variety of individual,
recreational and educational needs. "Sports for All," despite
skill level, is the mission of the King's College athletic program.
The William S. Scandlon Physical Education Center is the most complete
facility of its kind in the area. It houses a swimming pool, handball
and racquetball courts, wrestling and rifle facilities, Eagle Fitness
Center and Free Weight Room, fully-equipped training room, 2 full-time
trainers, and the McGrane gymnasium which has a seating capacity of 3,200.
In addition, the offices of the director of athletics, administrative
assistant, women's athletic representative, and the sports information
director are located in the center's upper level. The coaches' and trainers'
offices are located on the main level of the Scandlon Center.
Robert L. Betzler Athletic Fields is home to the outdoor sports program.
Along with the playing fields for field hockey, football, men's and women's
soccer, baseball, women's lacrosse, and softball the complex has the John
D. Dorish 69' Fieldhouse which accommodates all King's College athletes.
The varsity athletic program provides competition at the intercollegiate
level in 20 sports, and also sponsors two club sports, ice hockey and
men's volleyball. The intercollegiate sports program is a member of the
Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC), National Collegiate Athletic Association
(NCAA), and the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC). Students
who do not participate in varsity sports are encouraged to take part in
the full schedule of intramural sports, which make up a dynamic part of
the co-curricular activities at King's.
The Athletic Department is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. during the
academic year.
