ROOM ENTRY AND
SEARCH POLICIES
Room Entry
An authorized college employee may enter a student's room for the purpose
of inspection or repair, to determine compliance with fire codes and other
housekeeping regulations and in emergency situations where there is perceived
to be imminent danger to life, safety, health or property.
Staff members may enter a student's room after knocking if he or she has
reasonable grounds to believe that the occupants are violating college
policies, rules or regulations. However, no search is permitted unless
in conformity with the College Search Policy.
Search of Students
Residence, Vehicle, or Property
A student's room, locker, vehicle, or property will be searched only under
supervision of the associate vice president for student affairs or his/her
designee.
Searches originated by municipal, state or federal law enforcement agencies
must be accompanied by a valid search warrant or qualify under the law
as an exception to the search warrant requirement.
Searches originated by college officials must be accompanied by an administrative
search warrant. Requests for searches should be filed with the associate
vice president for student affairs or, in the associate vice president's
absence, the director of residence life or other designee. Administrative
search warrants will be issued only in cases where there is reasonable
cause to believe that a violation of college policies, rules or regulations
has taken place.
Violations that occur in the plain view of a college official who has
lawfully entered a student's residence or vehicle for a purpose other
than search are exempt from the administrative search warrant requirement.
