PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SEMINAR SERIES PREPARES KING'S STUDENTS FOR WORLD OF WORK

The King’s College Professional Development Seminar Series, under the direction of Dr. Joan Blewitt, director of career planning and placement at King’s College, helps prepare students for the realities of finding a place in an increasingly challenging job market. Recently, a panel of human resources representatives provided tips on how students could make a successful transition from school to the professional world.

The February 5 panel, “First Job Success,’’ brought together Vicky Micheletti, human resources administrator from Parente Randolph, Wilkes-Barre; Mary Ellen Petcavage, The Business Alliance, Inc., Wyoming; and Joseph Warmus, director of the Luzerne County Careerlink with King’s students soon to graduate and enter the working world. The panelists analyzed what aspects of an applicant’s behavior yield positive impressions, provided insights for young professionals entering the workforce, and fielded questions from the seminar attendees.

The next professional seminar on February 26 focuses, by videoconference, on “Turning a Liberal Arts Degree into a Career” and features two nationally recognized speakers and authors on the topics of career and higher education, Donald Asher and Dr. Howard Figler, on job search success for liberal arts majors. The panelists address career paths for the liberally educated, and help students in defining job objectives, finding their mission, identifying the special skills of liberal arts grads, developing effective job search tactics, and scoring points in the job interview.

The King’s College Office of Career Planning and Placement works to prepare King’s students for the world of work by providing them with the information and opportunities they need to pursue successful and rewarding careers upon graduation. The office works closely with local business leaders, human resources representatives, and local and national corporations in a wide range of fields to help King’s students make a successful transition from school to work.

In addition to the Professional Development Seminar Series, the Career Planning and Placement office holds Senior Week - four days in January during which students update their placement files, polish their resumes sharpen their job hunting strategies and identify potential employers - presents job fairs and provides individual guidance to students preparing for work, study and careers beyond graduation.
