CITYVEST EDUCATION COMMITTEE MEETS AT KING'S

TO DISCUSS COMMUNITY OUTREACH

August 3, 2005 – In the first cooperative effort by six local colleges, the CityVest Technology Education Project committee gathered at King’s College to discuss community outreach efforts for establishing partnerships with learning centers in Luzerne County. The Centers will provide access to alternative learning technology for college and high school students and community members with special learning needs.

CityVest initiated the cooperative effort with King’s College, College Misericordia, Luzerne County Community College, Penn State Wilkes-Barre, Penn State Hazleton, and Wilkes University to make the new learning technologies available. As a result, a federal grant from the Department of Education for $149,000 will benefit over 1,050 students.

In addition to helping college students, the CityVest Technology Education Project is designed to encourage high school students enrolled in alternative education centers to pursue post-secondary education; improve reading speed and comprehension while permitting students to learn and study independently; and to provide professional development and technical assistance to teachers of alternative education.

The CityVest Technology Education Project committee members include instructors in academic skills or learning support programs, Pennsylvania’s Act 101 program, disability services, or English as a Second Language (ESL). The CityVest Technology Education project committee is planning future meetings to organize and launch community outreach programs.

King’s College is a Catholic College sponsored by the Congregation of Holy Cross
