OVER 450 KING'S STUDENTS SERVE LOCAL COMMUNITY
Local volunteerism
creates a bonding experience
for King’s incoming students

August 18, 2005– King’s College is sponsoring CitySERVE 2005, on Friday, Aug. 26, the program is designed to introduce incoming students to the importance of the King’s College Mission through benevolent community service. It is a one-day, expansive service project for the entire incoming class of 475 first-year students, and comprises the second day of their orientation. Volunteer sites are located throughout the Wyoming Valley and in Scranton.

CitySERVE 2005 reflects a commitment to community service as part of a student’s first year experience. It is an entry-level introduction to service opportunities used to demonstrate the importance that King’s places on volunteerism within the local community, and is a shared experience that will hopefully bond students through volunteer experiences.

Dawn Morton, SERVE project coordinator, stresses, “CitySERVE demonstrates King's College commitment to service, provides an informal setting for students to get to know one another, and introduces students to the community and its people.  It is our hope that CitySERVE will spark students' interest in seeking out long-term service opportunities."

Students will aid the local community by volunteering their time in four different areas: children, elderly/special needs, construction, and homeless/poverty services.  They will go to over 25 sites including Child Development Council, St. Vincent de Paul Kitchen, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, and the VA Medical Center.

In addition to CitySERVE, King’s service projects include WinterSERVE and SpringSERVE, where teams of King’s students and advisors travel to sites in the U.S. and even Mexico to work at homeless shelters, Habitat locations, schools and parishes in need. Last year, nearly 450 students, over 40 faculty/ staff leaders, and 45 students leaders served at over 40 sites throughout the Wyoming Valley.

King’s College is a Catholic College sponsored by the Congregation of Holy Cross
