KING'S COLLEGE MOBILIZES

TO AID THE VICTIMS OF KATRINA

Concern for 3 Congregation of Holy Cross institutions
located in New Orleans

September 2, 2005, Wilkes-Barre, PA – The plight of those suffering in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina is the focus of the King’s College Campus Ministry and Office of Volunteer Services.

King’s, a member of the Congregation of Holy Cross, is  paying special attention to the fate of three Holy Cross  institutions in New Orleans: Our Lady of Holy Cross College, Holy Cross High School and the Sacred Heart Parish. Three Holy Cross priests, including the newly installed president of Our Lady of Holy Cross College, were evacuated by boat three days ago from the third floor of the flooded parish house.

Rev. Richard Hockman, C.S.C., college chaplain and director of Campus Ministry, is helping to coordinate the relief activities of the College and various campus groups and organizations. Father Hockman said, “The magnitude of this disaster is horrific, but the the compassion and generosity of Americans everywhere, including our community here at King’s, will hopefully bring the victims the help and comfort they so desperately need. They, along with  everyone involved in the rescue efforts, are in our prayers.”

Special collections are being made at the Masses held in the King’s College Chapel of Christ the King. Students are also organizing fund raising events.

Anyone wishing to contribute to relief efforts at King’s should contact Father Richard Hockman, C.S.C., King’s College Campus Ministry Office at the J. Carroll McCormick Campus Ministry Center at Jackson and North Franklin streets, or call 570 208-5892.
