DOCTOR, WRITER, CULTURAL CRITIC

BRIAN VOLCK TO SPEAK AT

KING'S COLLEGE

March 1, 2005 – Dr. Brian Volck – pediatrician, poet, humanitarian and cultural critic – will present three programs at King’s College on Tuesday, March 15. All three events are free and open to the public.

At 11 a.m. and again at 3:30 p.m., Dr. Volck will speak about "Body Politics: Medicine, the Church, and the Scandal of Borders" in the Burke Auditorium of William G. McGowan School of Business. At 7 p.m., he will give a poetry reading, which will also include his own work, "The Doctor, the Poet and the Body."

As a pediatrician and writer living in Cincinnati, Dr. Volck provides pediatric care while teaching residents and medical students at the University of Cincinnati and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. His professional interests include international child health, international adoption, literature and medicine, and the intersection of theology and medicine. After completing his pediatric residency in Cleveland, he worked with the Indian Health Service in Tuba City, Arizona, and later with an inner city health center in northern Kentucky. He regularly travels to rural Honduras to provide medical care.

A talented writer and insightful cultural critic, his prose and poetry have appeared in IMAGE, DoubleTake, America, and Sow’s Ear Poetry Review. Dr. Volck is on the board of directors for the Ekklesia Project and edits their online magazine.
