62 VOLUNTEERS FROM KING'S

TRAVEL TO 5 U.S. CITIES, MEXICO

March 24, 2005 – Forty-nine King’s students, and 13 faculty, staff, alumni and community leaders participated in SpringSERVE 2005. Traveling to five American cities and one parish in Monterrey, Mexico, the volunteers helped build houses for Habitat for Humanity, worked with developmentally disabled adults and children, served in homeless shelters, and volunteered at a Holy Cross parish.

In Leesburg, Fla., Port Huron, Mich., and Spartanburg, S.C., 24 students and six faculty, staff, and alumni volunteers worked with Habitat for Humanity.

In Chicago, Ill., eight students and two faculty and alumni leaders worked with the Center for Student Missions. The group spent their days in an inner city elementary school and spent their nights at soup kitchens and shelters.

Ten students and two faculty/staff leaders were the guests of Benedictine sisters in Ridgely, Md. The group worked with Saint Martin's Ministries, whose mission is to help the impoverished; served in the Benedictine School for Developmentally Challenged Children and also in the Transitional Living Home for women and children.

In Monterrey, Mexico, seven students and three staff/community leaders lived and worked with the people of the Holy Cross parish of Nuestra Madre Santierina de la Luz. The group spent time with the elderly and the youth of the parish by celebrating masses, sharing conversations and witnessing various social ministries.

King’s College Office of Volunteer Services provides opportunities for students, faculty and staff to make a difference in the local community and abroad with meaningful volunteer assignments. SERVE (Students Engaged in Reflective Volunteer Experiences) is among the most extensive of these volunteer initiatives at King’s.
