TOP BRASS TO PERFORM 'UNSUNG HERO'

AT KING'S COLLEGE

February 1, 2005– The Top Brass ensemble will join two vocalists and a narrator in a performance that brings music, song, and poetry to the King’s College Sheehy-Farmer Campus Center on Feb. 23 at 7 p.m.

Top Brass presents “Unsung Hero,” featuring Paul Lawrence Dunbar’s poetry brilliantly set to the music by four of America’s premier composers: Patrick Williams, two-time Grammy recipient; Lennie Niehaus, Emmy winner; David Baker, director, Smithsonian Institute Jazz Masterworks Orchestra; and Norlan Bewley, Top Brass resident composer.

The ensemble is comprised of classically trained musicians, playing a varied and energetic mix of classical, swing, and Big Band compositions. Top Brass has won several national chamber music competitions including the Joseph Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, and the wind and brass competition at the Coleman National Chamber Music Competition. The group has performed at such venues as Carnegie Hall.

“Unsung Hero” Paul Lawrence Dunbar overcame racism and poverty to create a body of work that has influenced many other African American writers including Langston Hughes, Maya Angelou, and Toni Morrison. His poetry is a powerful source of inspiration, resonating social and cultural issues that are relevant to any generation.

The group’s performance is part of King’s Experiencing the Arts series. For more information, visit “Experiencing the Arts Calendar” at www.kings.edu or contact Robert Yenkowski at (570) 208-5900, ext. 6044; e-mail rayenkow@kings.edu.
