Central Susquehanna Community
Foundation underwrites
3-tier study to assess connection
between environment and community health
Februrary 9, 2005 – Brian Mangan, assistant professor of biology and director of the Environmental Program of King’s College was recently awarded a $6,500 grant from the Central Susquehanna Community Foundation "to undertake a community environmental assessment and report for the Foundation. The assessment and report will inform the Foundation's possible future grantmaking in environmental stewardship and education.”
The report will focus on three aspects: 1) the assets and liabilities of the geographic area covered by the Foundation such as the existence of brownfields, sources of air pollutants, waste management and evidence and prevalence, if any, of asthma, cancer and lead poisoning due to toxic pollutants; 2) an inventory of the local resources related to the natural environment within the community and the school districts of Berwick, Northwest and Benton; and 3) recommendations for the future role of the Foundation in grantmaking, convening and promotion of environmental initiatives. The report is due June 2005.
Mangan founded and directs the Susquehanna River Institute at King’s College and has written and spoken widely on the river and its ecological impact. He has spearheaded research on local environmental issues, particularly those affecting the Susquehanna River and its surrounding communities.
According to King’s College Dean of Faculty Nicholas Holodick, “Dr. Mangan’s expertise is greatly valued and sought after. King’s is proud of the contributions he is making toward understanding and protecting the local environment, and for the valuable knowledge he imparts to his students. We are grateful to the Central Susquehanna Community Foundation in selecting him to undertake this important community environmental assessment.”
The Central Susquehanna Community Foundation is the community foundation for Columbia, Montour, Northumberland, and Lower-Luzerne Counties. Its purpose is to encourage increased philanthropy that will benefit the charities and communities located in this region, improving the quality of life today and for generations to come.
