GROUP KING'S STUDY ABROAD STUDENTS REFLECT ON LIFE IN CRACOW, ISTANBUL

Seniors Nick Brozowski and Blaise Fitzpatrick
recently studied abroad and returned
with insights to share and experiences to relate

October 4, 2005 – King’s College Study Abroad program afforded 30 students opportunities to study  or intern in foreign countries last year. Two of those students will discuss their experiences on Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. in the Sheehy-Farmer Campus Center of King’s College.

English major Nicolas Brozowski concentrated on Polish language studies at Jagiellonian University in Cracow, Poland. King’s senior Blaise Fitzpatrick continued his studies as a history major by focusing on modern Turkish history and on the Ottoman Empire along with the art and architecture of the Middle Ages at Bogazici University in Istanbul, Turkey. Both will share the stage to reflect on studying in another country.

They will talk about the excitement of foreign study and living abroad and discuss why the countries they chose might have appeal for other American students.

In "Experiencing Another Culture through Study Abroad" Brozowski will share with the audience his encounters with Polish society – Poland’s new economy, how Poles relate to each other, Poles’ attitudes toward the U.S., and the specialness of the country and its people. Nicholas Brozowski’s academic year in Poland was made possible through the highly prestigious and competitive Kosciusko Foundation Scholarship. He wants to return to Poland next year.

Fitzgerald will talk about the sheer excitement of being in Turkey during a period of dynamic political, economic, and social change. His spring semester in Istanbul was made possible in cooperation with a program of SUNY-Binghampton. Blaise Fitzgerald’s interest in Turkey and the Middle East is deep, and he had been studying the language on his own before he traveled to Istanbul. His stay in Istanbul immersed him in the language and contemporary culture of Turkey, and he flourished. He wants to continue his Middle East studies.

"Experiencing Another Culture through Study Abroad" is free and open to the public. The program is co-sponsored by King’s College Study Abroad program; Honors program; English department; history department; History Society, and foreign language department; and the Ethnic Initiative.

King’s College is a Catholic college sponsored by the Congregation of Holy Cross
