King’s College will host free screenings of the films “Made in L.A.,” “Eyes on the Prize – No Easy Walk,” and Glory” as part of the Third Annual King’s College Diversity Film Festival at 7 p.m. on Sept. 18, 25, and Oct. 2, respectively, in the Burke Auditorium, William G. McGowan School of Business, on N. River St.

As part of the film festival, Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Jose Galvez will discuss his career and the influence of his Hispanic heritage on his work during a free public lecture at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 11, in the Burke Auditorium.

A newspaper photographer for more than 20 years, Galvez was a member of a team at the “Los Angeles Times” that won a Pulitzer Prize in Community Service for a year-long series on the Latino experience in Southern California.

“Made in L.A.” follows the story of three Latina immigrants working in Los Angles sweatshops as they embark on a three-year odyssey to win basic labor protection from clothing retailer Forever 21. The film was awarded an Emmy in the category of Outstanding Continuing Coverage of a News Story-Long Form in 2008.

In observation of the 50th Anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington and Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, “No Easy Walk” was a segment of the award-winning PBS history series, “American Experience,” focusing on the emergence of mass demonstrations and marches as a powerful protest vehicle. Prior to the screening, a brief presentation will introduce guests to several historical figures, including Andrew Young, John Lewis, George Wallace, and T.E. “Bull” Connor.

The dramatic war film, “Glory,” is based on the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first formal unit of the US Army to be made up entirely of African American men to fight in the American Civil War. The film stars Matthew Broderick, Morgan Freeman, and Denzel Washington in an Oscar-winning performance (1989, Supporting Actor).

The film festival is sponsored by The Office of College Diversity and the McGowan Hispanic Outreach Program. For more information, contact Bro. George Schmitz, Coordinator, McGowan Hispanic Outreach Program Coordinator, at (570) 208-8021.
