The lecture, titled “Courage and Commitment: How Women are Changing the World,” will be held in the Burke Auditorium, located in the William G. McGowan School of Business, at King’s College. The purpose of the lecture is to promote dialogue on peace and justice in the community. The lecture is free and open to the public and it is co-sponsored by the King’s Women’s Studies Program and the College’s economics and mass communications departments. Varkony provides stories to National Public Radio and is an on-air commentator for the Emmy Award winning PBS program “Tempo.” She frequently writes and speaks on the subjects of gender and diversity and their impact on business and government cultures. She is the founder of Power of Women, a volunteer network that provides support for women to reach their goals. Varkony is also a member of the Business Council for Peace, which “helps women entrepreneurs in post-conflict countries expand their businesses, create employment, and build a peaceful future for their communities.” Varkony is the recipient of: the 2008 Excellence in Journalism award for her editorial writing; the Athena Award for Business Achievement; the American Association of University Women’s Gateway Award for leadership in women’s issues; a Woman of Distinction award from the Girl Scouts; and the Business Council for Peace VERA Award for her work in Afghanistan. The Barbara Sabol Memorial Lecture is named for a founding member of the Peace and Justice Center who died in 1997. The Peace and Justice Center is Northeastern Pennsylvania’s interfaith resource center for issues of peace and justice.
