King's welcomes author, media commentator, and think tank founder David Callahan to speak on
academic integrity and business ethics, Sept. 25
September 13, 2007 – Author, media commentator and think tank founder David Callahan will speak on corporate ethics and examine academic integrity during two presentations on Tuesday, Sept 25, in the Burke Auditorium of King's College's William G. McGowan School of Business on North River Street , Wilkes-Barre . The lectures are free and open to the public. The presentation is sponsored by the King's College McGowan Center for Ethics and Public Life.
At 3:30 p.m., Callahan will speak on “Honesty in the Academy,” a penetrating look at recent trends and explanations for student cheating, and also provide proven strategies for educators and students for promoting academic integrity.
At 7:30 p.m., he will discuss “The Cheating Culture,” a provocative analysis of the alarming state of ethics in America .
Callahan has written extensively about ethics, business, and public policy. He is a regular commentator for Marketplace, a public radio program focusing on world news through the lense of business, economics, and finance. In 1999, he co-founded Demos, a New York- based think tank, where he currently serves as Senior Fellow. He received his doctorate in politics from Princeton University .
He is the author of six books, including “The Cheating Culture: Why More Americans Are Doing Wrong to Get Ahead” and “Kindred Spirits: Harvard Business School 's Extraordinary Class of 1949 and How They Transformed American Business.” He has also published articles in such places as The New York Times , The Washington Post , and USA Today . He has been featured on numerous television and radio programs, including the CBS Early Show, the Dennis Miller Show, and Lou Dobbs Tonight.
The lecture is a part of the college's comprehensive business ethics program, its emphasis on academic integrity and the initiative to integrate ethics components in virtually all courses across the curriculum. These efforts are funded by a grant from the William G. McGowan Charitable Fund, Inc. William G. McGowan, founder and CEO of MCI, was a 1952 graduate of King's College.
