Sterling’s work offers suggestions and strategies on how to write a strong essay, and covers many different elements of Hawthorne’s literary works, including theme, characters, imagery, and symbolism, for students to explore in their essays. The volume, designed for high school students and early college students, covers many of Hawthorne’s works, including the novels “The Scarlet Letter” and “The House of the Seven Gables” and the short stories "Young Goodman Brown" and "Rappaccini's Daughter.” The volume, introduced by noted literary critic Harold Bloom, is part of Bloom’s “How to Write about Literature” series, which is designed to inspire students to write compelling essays on great authors and their works. Professor Sterling has taught at King’s for 16 years. She teaches a major authors course on Hawthorne, covers Hawthorne in her American Renaissance class, and discusses his craft in a genre class on the study of novels.
