January 22, 2008 - Dr. Calvin Johnson, Pennsylvania 's Secretary of Health, will present a free public address titled "The Role of Prevention in the Emerging Health Care System" at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, February 7, at King's College. Open free to the public, the lecture will be held in the Burke Auditorium of the McGowan School of Business, located at the corner of Union and River streets. The recipient of a degree in public health from the Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health, Johnson was appointed as Pennsylvania 's 24 th Secretary of Health in April 2003. Johnson directs nearly 1,800 Department of Health employees in its mission to promote healthy lifestyles, prevent injury and disease, and assure delivery of health care to state residents. In his five-year tenure as director, Johnson has set as a priority a reduction of health disparities among state residents through the creation of the Office of Health Equity. He also implemented a department-wide performance-based outcomes management initiative to gauge if public health programs are effectively meeting the needs of all Pennsylvanians and promoted children's wellness programs, with an emphasis on recruiting and retaining a well-trained public health workforce. Secretary Johnson's presentation is sponsored by the Health Care Administration Graduate Degree Program at King's.
