Residence Life

Q: How are first-year students assigned roommates?

A: Roommates are matched by the Office of Residence Life using the Resident Student Application, filled out along with the other information the students receive with their housing packet. It is very important that the student fill this out as accurately as possible in order to make the best roommate match.

Q: What happens if my son or daughter does not like their roommate?

A: Except in cases where there is an unusually severe problem between roommates, first-year students are encouraged not to change roommates during the first semester. Most early roommate problems are simply the result of adjusting to a new situation. However, if a change is necessary, resident students are able to make arrangements with the assistant director during the "Open Room Exchange" which takes place during the second full week of the semester.

Q: Will my son or daughter be housed in a building just for first-year students?

A: The residence halls at King's are not segregated by class year. Most floors are comprised of first-year students, sophomores, juniors, and seniors, with the greater number being first-year students and the lesser number being seniors.

Q: How are residence halls supervised?

A: The Office of Residence Life employs 19 undergraduate student leaders who develop a strong community and assist students with their needs while living in the residence halls. In addition, 12 residence counselors, who are non-students who hold a bachelor's degree, live in the halls and serve as positive adult role models for students. Also, a Holy Cross priest residing in Esseff Hall serves as hall chaplain for all halls.

Q: What types of activities are held in the residence halls?

A: Activities in the residence halls are designed to promote a more positive community. These activities can be of a social nature or more educationally focused. For example, a floor may have dinner together in the residence hall or go on a shopping trip off campus. Floors, as a group, will typically attend films, plays, or lectures given on campus. Other offices on campus conduct workshops on study skills, career planning, and personal relationships, as well.

Q: Are residence halls closed during semester break and vacations?

A: The contract for student housing does not provide for room and board during semester breaks, recesses, or official College holidays. Under special circumstances and for an additional fee, arrangements may be made with the assistant director for residence life to remain in a residence hall during a break. College dining is not available during this time.

Q: May my son or daughter return a day or two early from breaks or at the beginning of the semester?

A: No. The residence halls are closed during each recess or official College holiday and in between semesters. Permission to stay on campus during these times can only be granted for academic or athletic reasons by the director of residence life.

Q: What furniture is provided in each room?

A: All resident rooms are furnished with a bed, dresser, closet, desk, desk chair, book shelf, and desk lamp for each student. All rooms have wall-to-wall carpeting.

Q: What types of electrical appliances are permitted?

A: All resident students are required to limit their use of electrical appliances to the following: stereo equipment, a 19" or smaller portable color TV, clock, hairdryer, a 20" or smaller box fan (Esseff and Flood halls are air conditioned; Holy Cross and Luksic halls are not), refrigerator no larger than 3.5 cubic feet, toasters and toaster ovens, microwave ovens no more than 650 watts, hot pots, popcorn poppers, and coffee makers with UL-approved enclosed heating elements and automatic shutoffs. Any appliance without an enclosed heating element, such as a hot plate, is in violation of the safety codes and is not permitted.

Q: Should students bring bed linens and towels?

A: When resident students move into their rooms, they are supplied with sheets, a pillowcase, and three towels. Students must bring their own pillow. (Beds are "twin extra long," if you decide to bring you own linens.)

Q: Are there laundry facilities on campus?

A: Every residence hall on campus is equipped with its own laundromat located in the basement area. The facilities are operated via a debit card.

Q: Are members of the opposite sex allowed to visit in rooms?

A: Yes. Visitation in the living areas of the residence halls by persons of the opposite sex is permitted during the following hours:
Sunday through Thursday 10:00 a.m. to Midnight
Friday and Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m.

Q: Will King's College reimburse a student for stolen or damaged personal items?

A: King's College is not responsible for a student's personal belongings. The College highly recommends that you check your homeowner's insurance to make sure that student property is covered while living at college. Some carriers will provide a standard policy to insure personal belongings while attending college.

Q: Are there locks on resident students' rooms?

A: Each resident student's room in College-owned housing has a keyed door lock. Both residents of a room are issued a key and are encouraged to lock their doors whenever they are not in their rooms.

Q: Are resident students allowed to have their own private telephone service installed in their rooms?

A: Residence hall rooms are equipped with telephone jacks but not with telephones themselves. Residents must bring their own telephone. Local calls are included in the room charges. Students must sign up for long-distance service through STC phone company (1-800-355-1081). Calling cards from other sources may be used as well.

Q: In the case of a family emergency, how can I contact my son or daughter?

A: You can contact your son or daughter through a phone in their residence room. In a family emergency, the College staff can be a valuable resource. If you would like to have a College staff member inform a student of a family emergency, you may contact the Student Affairs Office at (570) 208-5875 during office hours or the College switchboard at (570) 208-5900 after hours.

Q: Are personal computers allowed in residence halls?

A: Yes. Students living in the residence halls may bring personal computers and connect them to the network. Internet connections via the campus network are available for every resident student. Several local computer sales and service vendors are available in the area. (See page 11 for more information.)

Q. Is internet access available from student residence hall rooms?

A. Yes. Each student room has access to the college internet system. Specifications for computer configuration (ethernet) is available from the College computing center.

Q: Can my son or daughter live off campus?

A: All first-year and sophomore students who do not reside with their parents or legal guardian and who are under 21 years of age, are required to live in one of King's College's residence halls. Junior and senior students may reside off campus but they must submit a request form to the Office of Residence Life along with a note from their parents or guardian, simply stating that they are aware of their son or daughter moving off campus.
