Computer
and Multimedia Facilities
|
Q: What computer facilities are available? A:
King's provides personal computer facilities for students in several locations.
The College's high-speed fiber network is available in every building
on campus. This network makes all internal and Internet resources available
to all members of the King's. The campus currently has well over 400 publicly
accessible Windows and Macintosh computers, located in 13 labs and 46
classrooms. These labs are located in The William G. McGowan School of
Business, the Administration Building, and the Sheehy-Farmer Campus Center.
All labs provide access to Office, database, statistical, graphic design,
multimedia, and collaboration applications. Students also have access
to all Internet applications, shared campus resources and numerous library
research resources as well. In addition, the Holy Cross, Luksic, and Esseff residence halls have smaller computer facilities. Internet, email and web accounts are available to all students. Students wishing to purchase computers are able to take advantage of discounts available through several manufacturers and local vendors. Students wanting additional information about the College's computing resources are encouraged to consult with the computing center. Q: What kind of media production services are available to students? A:
The technology module component of the King's College core curriculum
requires that all students, regardless of major, be able to access, process,
and present information. Multimedia production and multiple media delivery
techniques are more important than ever. King's supports a full color
television studio, broadcast-quality video editing facilities, and several
industrial-quality video suites. In addition, the media center provides
audio production services as well as traditional A/V services such as
slide making, overhead transparency production, and laminating. These
facilities are available to support students' presentation media needs
in all areas of the curriculum and provide a hands-on experience for those
majors in mass communications/media technologies. The department circulates
portable computing (laptops) and data projection equipment in direct support
of the curriculum. All
students in the residence halls have private telephone lines as well as
individual access to the Internet via the college network. A single cable
television jack is also located in every residence hall room. Local telephone
calls and basic cable services are included with the room. Access
to the Internet is also included with the room. Students with a PC with
TCP/IP (built in with all versions of Windows), a 10BaseT Ethernet connection
and a 10BaseT patch cable may plug into the network using one of the black
telephone jacks in their room. Students may set up their own computer
on the network. Instructions are on the King's web. Please note that the College is not licensed to redistribute software. Also note that students who use any computer on the College network, including those not owned by the College must adhere to the Student Conduct Code and the Computer Resource Policy found in the Student Handbook and on the web. |
