A: Yes. The Office of Career Planning and Placement offers a part-time job service for all students. Students need to register for jobs at the beginning of each semester. Over 1400 part-time and summer job leads are received each year in the Office of Career Planning and Placement. Part-time and summer job experiences are becoming increasingly important as "resumé builders." Part-time and summer leads are sent to students registered for this job notification service and are also published by the Office of Career Planning and Placement in a monthly newsletter called Career News Update.
A: Our developmental career planning and job search program as well as the "Career Development Across the Curriculum" program are designed to impact students throughout their experience at King's College. Therefore, the best time to meet initially with a career counselor is during the first year. A one-credit course, CARP 211, is an excellent beginning for first-year and sophomore students. Q: What services does the Career Planning and Placement Office provide to students seeking employment upon graduation? A: The Office of Career Planning and Placement provides a broad spectrum of services aimed at preparing students to enter the job market. Monthly workshops on resume´ and interview skills development, a specific one-credit course focused on the job search (CARP 412), and individual counseling sessions are offered. Nearly 80 recruiting visits are made on campus each year. In addition, the Office of Career Planning and Placement annually co-hosts one job fair in conjunction with four other local colleges, bringing more than 135 companies to the area. Q: What assistance is available for researching graduate and/or professional schools? A: National directories and specific catalogues are available in the Graduate School Library, located in the Office of Career Planning and Placement. Information on admissions tests and financial aid sources are just some of the resources available. Advisement sessions with career counselors and the Sigi Plus Computer Program are also very valuable sources for graduate school information. The Office of Career Planning and Placement website also provides links to specific graduate programs and professional schools. Q: Does the Career Planning Office help students find internships? A: The Office of Career Planning and Placement coordinates the senior year accounting internship programs, with an impressive list of national accounting firms and corporations participating. The Center for Experiential Learning coordinates internships for some other academic majors while specific departments coordinate others. In addition, the Office of Career Planning and Placement strongly encourages students to engage in volunteer, summer, and part-time job experiences to add experience to their resumes. Q: What is the placement rate of new college graduates from King's? A: An annual survey which is published one year after graduation shows that last year 99.5% of our new graduates have found placement in jobs, military service, full-time volunteer positions, or graduate/professional school. Over 87% of those placed are working in fields for which they were directly prepared. Q: How do students find out about career services that are available to them? A: All students are welcome to visit the Office of Career Planning and Placement (lower level, Administration Building). Each month the Office of Career Planning and Placement develops and publishes two newsletters which are placed in the students' on-campus mailboxes. These newsletters provide updates on career information, career courses, on-campus recruiters and full and part-time job leads. Faculty members and several administrative offices also frequently refer students to the Office of Career Planning and Placement. |
