HEALTH CENTER - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What are the health center hours?

The Student Health Center is open at the following times during the fall and spring semester:
Monday – Friday
8:30am – 4:30pm
Closed Saturday and Sunday
Health center hours and changes in hours are posted on the door to the student health center, the student government office and through the student email system.

What should I do if I am injured or feeling ill?

Come to the Student Health Center or call us at 5852. You will evaluated by health center clinicians.  If you are not sure that you need a visit, ask to speak to the nurse who will help you decide.  If you are seriously ill, you might be referred to the hospital or an off-campus specialist.

Do I need an appointment?

The health center is a walk-in clinic that does not require a special time except in the following instances:

  • Allergy injections
The student health center staff administers allergy injections only during doctor's hours
Time and day allergy injections are administered:
    Monday 8:30am – 11:30am
  • TB Tests (Mantoux)
TB tests are available at the student health center on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Tests must be read within 48 hours. If the student does not return in 48 hours it will be necessary to repeat the TB test.

The Health Service tries to provide the services you need at your convenience, although the average wait time is 15-20 minutes during high volume times.

(Students are responsible for all bills incurred that are not covered by their health insurance provider.)

What happens to students who are too ill to stay in the residence halls?

King's college is located in central Wilkes-Barre and is in close proximity to several hospitals and clinics. Depending upon the nature and/or seriousness of the illness, a student can be admitted to one of the local hospitals or be sent home.

How do students get to local hospitals or to medical appointments off-campus?

If necessary, transportation to a medical facility is available for resident students.

Emergencies

Dial 911 for Wilkes-Barre City EMS

If your student is very ill, or in need of further evaluation, we may refer him/her to the emergency room or to an off-campus specialist. If the emergency room is needed, the student health center may request an ambulance for transport to a local hospital.  If students become seriously ill when the Health Service is closed, they should notify the RA or RC on call and if necessary call Wilkes–Barre City EMS for assistance.

Is my health care confidential?

Your medical care is strictly confidential , and no information will be released to parents, faculty, administrators, insurance companies, or anyone else, without your permission.  The only exceptions are:

  • If suicide or homicide is threatened
  • If you are in a life-threatening condition, medical information will be released to the professionals who are providing care or to others on a need to know basis. Exception: HIV status will not be released.
  • If you are admitted to the hospital, the Associate Dean of Student Affairs will be notified.
  • If we are requested by law for some communicable diseases or by a subpoena.

What does confidential care mean?

If students are over 18 years of age, it means that we cannot tell you about their health care unless we have permission from the student.

We will be happy to discuss the situation with you when we have permission to do so.  If your student refuses to give his/her permission, there is nothing we can do unless they are in a life-threatening condition.  If this happens, we will notify the Vice- President and the Associate Dean of Student Affairs or the hospital, who will call you immediately.

Please make sure that your emergency contact numbers are current.

The health fee is pre-payment for services provided by the King's College Student Health Center . The health fee is mandatory for full-time resident undergraduate students and international students.

Payment for off-campus care or off-campus medication is the responsibility of the student. Students are responsible for all bills incurred that are not covered by their health insurance carrier.
