K'NEX Kamp | back
Campers can be creative, innovative, decorative, descriptive, and imaginative by snapping interlocking plastic parts together. There are rods, “snowfl akes,” connectors, tires, and more! Whether the design is simple or complex, delight in inventing or replicating a project with colorful K’NEX pieces. Draw and construct a wind surfer, butterfl y, dinosaur, gyro swing, ferris wheel, etc. If you can imagine it, you can build it with K’NEX. K’NEX Kit is included in the price of the class and children will take them home at conclusion of the camp.

Read along as we dig into some popular books while practicing fl uency and decoding skills and take home a creative writing activity on story day. Listen to your favorite music, learn about the artist, and create a rockin’ poster on music day. The Secret Life of Weird Creatures and Bizarre Beings | back
Do you like to draw aliens? Are you interested in dragons and trolls? Every day brings a new, sometimes messy craft, as you have fun making maps, writing monster tales, and even going on a monster hunt. Come explore the history and tradition of the American Girl Doll Collection. Each day learn about a new American Girl Doll. Focus will be on Molly, Kit, Felicity, Kirsten, Addy and Julie. We will conclude the week with a dress-like-your-doll day featuring a tea party prepared by you and featuring your favorite American Girl Doll as your guest.

In Their Own Words: Meet the Authors | back
Would you like to learn about children’s literature from the authors and illustrators who create the stories? This class will allow students to actually meet the authors and illustrators of some popular children’s books. Students will begin each day by reading a book and learning about the author, then will actually meet the author, who will be on campus as part of the annual Children’s Literature Workshop at King’s. Students will learn how the authors develop their stories and characters, how they work with an illustrator to bring a story to life, and the other elements that go into writing a successful children’s book. Authors include Susan Campbell Bartoletti, (historical children’s books) Debbie Dadey (the Bailey School Kids), and Jean Van Leeuwen (the Oliver Pig books). Why spend a Night at the Museum, when you can spend a whole week investigating the Smithsonian Institute? In this class we will use the internet to explore different parts of the museum such as the new Triceratops Exhibit, the Hall of Mammals, and the How Things Fly area. We will formulate a theory on the disappearance of Amelia Earhart, create our own Smithsonian Gallery Newsletter, and perform a few experimental activities along the way. In this camp students will explore new and exciting ways to transport (move) a variety of objects. Campers take on the challenge to invent a cure for Hubert’s baldness and craft a new mane. Do you know what a whingdingdilly is? Draw your rendition of Scamp the dog turning into a whingdingdilly. In another story, meet the Wumps who live in a serene environment. Recycle Wump garbage and make trash art sculptures. Do you like to travel and learn about new places? Use your imagination and creativity as you share adventures with Flat Stanley, the main character in a series of books by Jeff Brown. After reading the book, make your own Flat Stanley so he can do some local sightseeing with you during class. Take him home to show him your favorite places and to take pictures with your family and friends. Make a scrapbook detailing your shared adventures. At the end of the week, choose a friend or relative in another city or state, mail him for a visit, and see what he brings back to add to your scrapbook and to teach you something about a new place!

Recycling Fun | back
Students will learn about the effects of “going green” first hand. The benefits of recycling will be stressed throughout the week as well as finding ways even the youngest eco-friendly citizens can help save the planet! Students will have fun creating recycled toys from household items. Each student will even design and decorate a dream room from only recyclables. The Swap Shop will conclude the week as each participant brings in a gently, but no longer used, toy or item to trade.

Hey, I’m On the Radio! | back
Do you love listening to the radio and wonder what it takes to be a good disc jockey? Is it really just as easy as pushing a few buttons and playing tunes? In this class you‘ll get to see what’s involved with being “on the radio”. You’ll learn about sound editing, using the sound editing program Adobe Audition 1.5, where you can actually SEE what you SAY. You’ll even record your own radio show and learn the tricks of the radio trade. Taught by Cathy Donnelly of WILK Newsradio, Froggy 101, and 102.3 the Mountain.

Pasta and noodles everywhere! Do you love pasta? In this creative class we will be having fun with pasta. Learn how to make pasta from scratch. Recycled Art | back
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! This world we live in only has so much space! We have to be aware of what we are using and how we are using it. In this class we will create cool art projects from items that normally would be thrown in the garbage or into the recycle bin. We’ll be using items such as tin cans, food boxes and containers, soda bottles and Styrofoam. Let’s create art instead of more garbage and become more aware in the process! At the end of the week we will hold a Recycled Art Exhibition including each of the camper’s favorite creations for parents and friends to attend.

Follow the life of a cupcake through all four seasons! Build frosty snowmen and Valentine’s Day confections. March with the penguins and plant a spring garden. Keep the Earth Green and Your Health Clean | back
See what the “going green” trend is about as we explore what is going wrong with our earth and what we can do to save it. Learn about small habits that can make a huge difference in saving our planet. We will explore climate change, energy, pollution, and animal extinction by using a variety of media and creating many take home projects. As we learn about taking care of the earth we’ll also learn to take care of our bodies by keeping active, eating right, and avoiding illness. We’ll use a stethoscope to listen to your heartbeat before and after you get it pumping with exercises and games. We will do an experiment to see how many germs our hands carry, discover why an active lifestyle is so important, and learn how positive thinking can help us to stay healthy. This class will include hands-on activities that will cover a wide range of earthy and healthy topics. Teaching materials for this class are used in collaboration with Northeast PA Area Health Education Center (AHEC).

Scrapbook Maniac | back
Scrapbooking is a fast growing and fun hobby for all ages. Students will design memory pages using scrapbooking techniques as well as their own unique style. This class will focus on the care of your dog. UN-Cooking with Organic Food | back
In this exciting course students will create an organic garden and learn UN-cooking with organic food. They will create and name their own smoothies and salad dressings for the “2009 Kids at King’s Recipe Book” which will be published at the end of the week. Children will plant their own organic herb garden and learn responsibility while nurturing herbs from seed. They will be taught how to keep a garden journal and how to read seed packets. Several recipes will be created each day and topics for the week include: Hygiene – Clean Hands/Clean Food; Safety and Use of Blender/Food Processor/Juicer; Proper Table Setting; Food Appreciation from Seed to Table; Introduction and Tasting of Various Pantry Products, Vegetables, Fruits, Nuts, Seeds, Herbs, and Spices. Apron and scrub brush will be provided for each student.
Because students will be handling food, they need to have clean bodies, hair, and clothes, tie back long hair, and wear closed toe shoes and short sleeve shirts.
Unfortunately due to the number of different foods students will be exposed to in this class, students with food allergies/intolerances should not take this class.

Studio Art Exploration | back
When we say art exploration, that’s exactly what we mean! This week is made for exploring. We’ll be trying a new artistic medium each day -- colored pencils, pastels, watercolors, acrylics and oils. We will learn the tools needed, proper use and cleanup, what the medium is made of, advantages and disadvantages to using this medium, and some famous artists who use them. We will practice using each medium and complete a fun and simple project. Come discover the many sides of art through play and exploration, no rules apply!

Fun with Origami | back
The art of origami is an ancient Japanese art form that involves folding paper into intricate shapes and objects. The most familiar origami creation is the paper crane, but it does not have to end with just a paper bird. In this class you will not only learn how to fold but how to make window hangings with light catching beads, mobiles with cranes and other creatures, and even make fashionable jewelry to wear or give as gifts. From learning the basic folds to putting together your final project, it’s a fun time for all.

Dance Team Experience! | back
So, you think you can dance? Do you want to be a Rockette or a part of America’s Best Dance Crew? Step up and take the lead for this full-day dance sampler workshop! This is the perfect opportunity to learn some new tricks and choreography and brush up on your technique before new classes start in the fall. Get a taste of all styles of dance including: ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, kickline and MORE! Plus, take center stage in a performance of your favorite styles of dance at the end of the session. Hey, maybe your mama don’t dance, but you could be dancing with the stars!

Hand Quilting For Kids | back
In this class, students will go back in time and learn the treasured art of hand quilting. Students will learn each step of the quilting process from making their own templates, marking fabric, cutting out their pieces, sewing the pieces together by hand, basting, binding, and hand quilting or tying the fi nished product. This class is designed to teach the basics of money. Where do you get it? How do you manage it? On the first day you will choose an occupation. You will then be given a pretend bank account and check book. Throughout the week you will role play receiving a pay check, depositing or cashing it, withdrawing money, budgeting, saving, reading your bank statement and more! Learn many important things to know about managing money along with some responsible habits to keep as you go. These are valuable lessons to learn and skills that you will use throughout your entire life.

Recycled Art | back
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! This world we live in only has so much space! We have to be aware of what we are using and how we are using it. In this class we will create cool art projects from items that normally would be thrown in the garbage or into the recycle bin. We’ll be using items such as tin cans, food boxes and containers, soda bottles and Styrofoam. Let’s create art instead of more garbage and become more aware in the process! At the end of the week we will hold a Recycled Art Exhibition including each of the camper’s favorite creations for parents and friends to attend.

Have you ever wanted to tell a story, or try your hand at being the next J.K. Rowling? In this course, students will be given multiple creative writing challenges, designed to help them grow and experiment creatively. By the end of the week, students will have worked in fiction, poetry, and basic script/playwriting/screenwriting. Students will also learn some basics of peer critique and fiction craft. All that’s required is an imagination, a willingness to try and basic writing implements. The week will culminate with a reading of your original works for family and friends.

Keep the Earth Green and Your Health Clean! | back
See what the “going green” trend is about as we explore what is going wrong with our earth and what we can do to save it. Learn about small habits that can make a huge difference in saving our planet. We will explore climate change, energy, pollution, and animal extinction by using a variety of media and creating many take home projects. As we learn about taking care of the earth we’ll also learn to take care of our bodies by keeping active, eating right, and avoiding illness. We’ll use a stethoscope to listen to your heartbeat before and after you get it pumping with exercises and games. We will do an experiment to see how many germs our hands carry, discover why an active lifestyle is so important, and learn how positive thinking can help us to stay healthy. This class will include hands on activities that will cover a wide range of earthy and healthy topics. Teaching materials for this class are used in collaboration with Northeast PA Area Health Education Center (AHEC).

Travel through the Environment | back
Join a week-long look into the lives of organisms that surround us. Experience their specialties, their oddities, and their lives as we delve into the worlds of marine biology, ornithology (birds), entomology (insects), botany and habitat diversity. Students will experience the environment around us through an owl pellet investigation, a discussion of insect adaptation and structure, an understanding of plant and habitat diversity, and knowledge of water engineering and how it affects the organisms within. Each topic will be discussed in depth while using hands-on activities and technology to better assimilate the student into the different environments.

Do you love listening to the radio and wonder what it takes to be a good disc jockey? Is it really just as easy as pushing a few buttons and playing tunes? In this class you‘ll get to see what’s involved with being “on the radio”. You’ll learn about sound editing, using the sound editing program Adobe Audition 1.5, where you can actually SEE what you SAY. Follow the life of a cupcake through all four seasons! Build frosty snowmen and Valentine’s Day confections. March with the penguins and plant a spring garden.
