1. Open the network connections
by clicking on
and then
select the control panel. If you have a network connections selection (show
below) on your menu you can select that and skip right to step 4.

2. In the control panel select Network and Internet Connections. If your control panel does not look like the one below, select Category View from the left hand menu.

3. Select Network Connections from the Control Panel Icons Section.

4. Right Click on the Local Area Network Icon and select Properties. Please Note that this is the default name given and could be different from yours.

5. This will open the Network Properties Sheet. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and Double-click it or highlight it and select the Properties Button.

6. Make sure the following
settings and set for the TCP/IP Properties. Check that the Obtain an IP
address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically
is set

7. Click OK the set the changes.
8. Optional: If you wish to make your connection more secure and protect your machine form attacks and some computer viruses, you can enable the built-in firewall in windows XP. To do this, in the Network properties, click on the Advanced Tab and put a check in the box and then Click OK. You should reboot your computer after applying this setting so that it takes affect.
