Call for Papers and Panels

The interdisciplinary conference on "Economic Development, Ethics and the Environment in the 21 st century Latin America " will bring together scholars, educators, graduate, undergraduate, students and community members interested in Latin American Studies. The focus of the interdisciplinary conference at King's College will be Latin America 's place in a globalised world. Interdisciplinary papers and panels on issues and topics related to Latin America are invited. We hope to attract a wide range of inter-disciplinary, perspectives, and all topics are welcome. Student papers are welcome.

We particularly encourage submissions in the following areas:

. Ecosystems, cultures, and society
. Economic development and identity
. Trade agreements: current debates and negotiations
. Arts and cultural production; popular culture
. Memory, peace and reconciliation processes
. The changing political landscape
. Assessment of political and economic Risks
. Population policy, poverty and food security
. International human trafficking
. Leadership, culture and society
. Natural resource management and environmental stewardship
. Social responsibility and ethical issues
. Development and entrepreneurship
. Decentralization, local governance and participatory processes
. Literacy and information technologies
. Role of NGOs and social service organizations
. Emerging markets of Latin America
. Geography, demographics and development
. Urban landscapes
. Migrations and Diaspora
. Race and ethnicity
. Gender and sexuality
. State-nation relations
. Youth culture
. Rights and citizenship
. Cultural change
. Development and finance

This list is merely suggestive of the range of topics appropriate for the Interdisciplinary Conference on Latin America, which ideally seeks inputs from scholars across a number of disciplines related to environment of Latin America .

Submissions and Review Process

Proposals for panels and or papers must be submitted by January 30 th , 2008 , and authors will be notified of the decision by February 27, 2007 . Panel proposals should include names of panelists and their personal notes to attend, should the panel be accepted. Submissions should be sent to one of the contacts listed below.

Submissions should consist of a 2-3 page summary of the proposed paper or panel.

The Program Committee will review all papers and proposals. For further information regarding the nature and structure of the 2008, Interdisciplinary Conference, please contact one of the following:

Submissions:
To be considered for the program, please submit one of the following:

  1. A completed paper
  2. An abstract (between 100 and 600 words)
  3. A proposal for a workshop, special session, panel discussion or symposium

Proposals should include the panel title, an abstract of 300 words (max.) outlining the topic and aims of the panel, and a contact name, address, and email. Names of presenters and paper titles should be included when possible. In order to include as diverse a range of topics as possible, please limit your panel submissions to a maximum of 2 sessions of 90 minutes . Recommended presentation time per paper 20 minutes plus 10 minutes for discussion.

Deadline for proposals: 30th January. Acceptance decisions will be made by 27 th February.
Registration fee: US $80.00 (includes six meals on campus).
