Prepare for your career now! Honors students have the flexibility to design truly personalized instruction through a one-on-one tutorial course with a faculty mentor. Independent studies are usually open to juniors and seniors, and must fill a particular, individual scholarly need which cannot be met by the normal course of studies.
Proposals for independent studies must be submitted to the director of the honors program one semester in advance and must receive the approval of the chairperson of the student's major department. Students schedule regular meetings with a faculty advisor and determine assignments, readings, and tests.
Another option for even more personalized learning is the self-designed major/minor. Overseen by the honors program, this is a series of courses designed by the student in consultation with one or more faculty mentors. Courses for the major are selected from the regular College offerings, supplemented by a carefully-developed sequence of independent studies.
