In their freshman and sophomore years, students complete the humanities suite of honors courses, made up of philosophy, theology, literature and the arts and history courses. Students work to hone their critical thinking skills throughout this series of humanities courses especially in the philosophy sequence, and the honors composition section.
All honors students are expected to complete six foreign language credits. Students who begin with Language 143 or higher take two courses and receive a grade of "C" or higher in these courses, will receive six advanced placement credits for their previous study which may then be applied to lighten the student's elective load by two courses.
As they progress through their years at King's, students will develop their interests and deepen their knowledge by participating in four honors seminars covering all major disciplines at King's College. Besides regularly scheduled honors seminars, the program offers the option of achieving honors credit for departmentally-required courses through honors extension contracts. In addition, independent studies are available.
Students are also allowed to cover six credits of the seminar requirement by participating in internships, study abroad programs, practica, and other approved projects.
The senior year honors "capstone" is an independent guided research project performed with a faculty mentor and resulting in an honors thesis. While it is expected that the capstone project will address a topic in the student's major field, all proposals will be considered on an individual basis. This capstone project is a prerequisite for receiving the honors certificate at graduation.
