STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM - APPLICATION PROCESS

Once you have chosen a program, you will need to complete the following steps:

Step #1: The approval process

You must complete a supplemental application form and have it signed by your academic advisor and the associate vice president for student affairs.  Your advisor's signature verifies that they are aware of your intentions to study abroad, that the program complements your studies at King's, and that you are academically prepared to study abroad. The associate vice president's signature verifies that you have not posed significant disciplinary problems while attending King's.

Step #2: The application process

All study abroad programs have an application form for admission.  Now that you have received approval from King's College to study abroad, you must complete and submit your program application.

Follow the checklist below to complete this step.

  1. Get an application.
Application forms for all affiliated programs can be found in the Study Abroad Office. Many applications for non-affiliated programs also can be found there. If you cannot locate an application form, we will contact the program sponsor and have it mailed to us.
  2. Complete the application.
Most application forms are self-explanatory. If you have questions about completing either the application for an affiliated or a non-affiliated program, please call the Study Abroad Office for assistance. If we cannot answer your questions, we will contact the program's sponsor on your behalf.
  3. Be prepared to supply photographs.
Many application forms require photographs-sometimes from one to ten of them! You may have these photos taken at several locations locally. Only some applications will accept your high school senior pictures, so please read the application requirements carefully regarding size and number of photos.
  4. Complete a Transcript Release Form.
All applications require a current academic transcript. The registrar's office will provide you with a Transcript Release Form to complete and submit. Have your transcript sent by the registrar to the Study Abroad Office. We will send your transcript with your completed application to the program.
  5. Submit the application to the Study Abroad Office.
All applications, whether for affiliated or non-affiliated programs, must be submitted to the Study Abroad Office for mailing. Our office will mail completed applications within three days of receipt. Remember to include your application fee. Note: It is important to have your letters of reference completed and returned directly to the Study Abroad Office. If the references are mailed directly to your program, our office will consider your application incomplete, and it will not be mailed.
  6. Call the Study Abroad Office for an update.
Is your application complete? Was it mailed? If you are curious about these answers, please call the Study Abroad Office at (570) 208-5986 and we will update you on the status of your application.
  7. W-A-I-T
The hardest part of the application process is waiting to hear if you have been accepted. You will usually hear about your admission within three to six weeks after receipt of your application.

Step #3:  You've been accepted!

Congratulations! You are on your way to what will be a very exciting time in your life. Along the way, remember that the Study Abroad Office is available to assist you.

Any time now, you should receive information from your program sponsor regarding housing, orientation, flight arrangements, etc.

Here's what you will need to do next:

  1. Register at King's for the regular study abroad period.
  2. Get a passport or renew an old one.
  3. Book your flight.
  4. If you need a student visa, speak with Mrs. Farmer immediately at (570) 208-5986.
  5. Submit all additional forms and deposits directly to your program by their deadlines.
  6. Check with the Study Abroad Office about the date and time of the mandatory Pre-Departure Orientation for all students going abroad scheduled near the end of each semester.
  7. Keep your grades up. Remember that affiliated program grades become part of your King's College academic record. If you are studying through a non-affiliated program, your grades are still important, even though they do not affect your King's GPA. Graduate schools and employers typically review transcripts from all the schools you have attended do your best academically.
  8. Write down any remaining questions you have and make sure to get them answered.
