STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM - STUDENT EXPERIENCES

Ed Rafter
Mass Communications
Class of 2009
Arcadia Summer Internship
Sydney, Australia

How did you select your Study/Intern Abroad location?

I actually was interested in Studying Abroad in London first, but when they told me the field that I was interested in was not available they told me that they could transfer my application to a similar program in Sydney, Australia.  So, I thought why not, and a few weeks later I was accepted!

Why did you want to study or intern abroad?

I wanted to do something I would never forget before I graduated.  I am very involved here at King’s, but I wanted to do something different (like usual).  I like to travel whenever the chance and financial help comes along, and this internship program came along at just the right time.

What was the highlight of this experience?

Sight-seeing.  Even though we had papers to work on while we were there, our group definitely took advantage of what Australia had to offer.  Kangaroos and Koala Bears are a must see of course, but the architecture and beaches are definitely great to explore as well.

What surprised you the most?

The history behind Australia really surprised me.  History is always surprising though if it’s relatively new to you.   Growing up, we mainly learn about European and American History; Australia is rarely talked about, so it was nice to know the background behind the country and its people.

How has (or how might) this experience affect your major and future career?

I really enjoyed working at the theatre I was interning at for the six weeks.  The people I got to work with and meet were amazing to say the least.  I really enjoyed myself there, and I could definitely see myself going back again someday to visit.  Unfortunately, I don’t know if I could ever live there due to the time difference, but Australia is worth the trip and the time spent in the air isn’t as bad as it seems.

What would you tell students considering studying or interning abroad?

Go for it!  What’s the main reason holding you back?  There are plenty of resources on and off campus that can help you along your way.  It’s an experience of a lifetime that you should definitely take before you end up graduating, getting a job, settling in, and then wishing you would have done it before it was too late.
