Quintet brings jazz, spice of the Caribbean to free public concert at River Commons

October 14, 2009 – Bring out the blankets and lawn chairs for a free public concert featuring the musical blend of American jazz and spicy rhythms of the Caribbean by Latin jazz quintet, Salsamba, at 6 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 21, at The River Common: Millennium Circle on N. River Street, across from the King’s College campus.

Based in Pittsburgh, Salsamba is composed of Eric Susoeff, guitar; George Jones, congas; Paul Thompson, bass; Eric DeFade, sax and flute; and, John Rampolla, drums. The band has been featured on NPR’s American Jazz Radio Festival program and has performed at clubs, festivals and colleges throughout the United States. They have opened for Latin Jazz King Tino Puente, guitarists John Scofield and Stanley Jordan.

In 1999, Salsamba released their third recording, “LATINVENTIONS,” featuring fiery rhythms, lyrical melodies and sensational improvisation. The band recently released a fourth CD titled, “The Traveler.”

This program is supported by the Pennsylvania Humanities Council on the Arts, a state agency, through its regional arts funding partnership, Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts (PPA). State government funding comes through an annual appropriation by Pennsylvania’s General Assembly and from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.

In case of inclement weather, the performance will be held in the Burke Auditorium, William G. McGowan School of Business, located across from Millennium Circle.
