KING'S TO OFFER PROFESSIONAL WRITING
BACHELOR'S DEGREE

October 24, 2007 - King's College has become one of approximately 60 colleges and universities in the country and the only institution in Northeastern Pennsylvania to offer a bachelor's degree program in professional writing.

The 41-credit major track expands a previous program through which a student could obtain a bachelor's degree in English with a concentration in writing.  The new major program will commence in the spring semester, which begins in January.

Within the professional writing major, students will choose to follow a professional/technical writing track or a creative writing tack.  Common to both tracks will be eight upper-level English courses, two electives, and three literature courses chosen from a menu including period, genre, and major author concentrations.

“The new major is designed to best position King's undergraduates for entry into the working world of an information-based economy,” according to Dr. Laurie Sterling, professor of English and department chairperson.  “The major will emphasize theoretical training for writing and editing.  This theoretical foundation will give our students the tools to recognize and negotiate the rhetorical situations that are the root of all writing, and these tools will provide King's professional writing majors with greater flexibility, not only in terms of the variety of jobs they can reasonably apply for, but in terms of the variety of work they can do for any given employer.”

In addition to writing theory, several classes will allow students hands-on experience with computer software packages being used extensively by professional writers, ranging from Microsoft Word and PowerPoint to Adobe InDesign and Dreamweaver.

King's College is a Catholic College sponsored by the congregation of Holy Cross.
