King’s Unique Master’s Program Focuses on Curriculum and Instruction

June 15, 2009 - Beginning this fall, King’s College will offer a new graduate degree program with a unique format.  The master’s of education degree program in Curriculum and Instruction will allow participants to specialize in one of four areas of concentration: English as a second language, pre-kindergarten through fourth-grade elementary education, science education or mathematics education.

The 30-credit curriculum, in development for two years, has been approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. All participants will take five core education classes that focus on curriculum theory and design, issues and trends in education, interactive learning, inclusionary classroom practices, and educational research and statistics.  The other five courses taken in the program will be dependent on the area of concentration chosen by each participant.  All courses will be offered in the new Gateway Corners building, which will house the King’s education department and include state-of-the-art classrooms with the latest technology.

“The new master’s program builds on King’s strengths in undergraduate programs, as well as on existing graduate programs in reading, in English as a Second Language, and in enrichment courses offered through the College’s Professional Development Center,” said Dr. Nicholas Holodick, vice president of academic affairs at King’s.

“This master’s degree program was designed to help meet the needs of area teachers, as demonstrated in interest surveys of area public and parochial school teachers and administrators conducted by King’s,” said Dr. Joyce Armstrong, associate professor and director of the College’s graduate programs in education.  “Classes will be offered in a variety of formats, including evening, weekend and accelerated summer courses.“

Further information on the program can be obtained by contacting Dr. Elizabeth Lott, director of graduate programs at King’s, at (570)208-5991.
