King's honors Lawrence M. Sullivan for professional achievement
Wilkes-Barre , PA – June 13, 2007 – King's College presented the Honorable Lawrence M. Sullivan, Esq., with the Outstanding Professional Achievement Award during recent Reunion Weekend activities.
Sullivan of Wilmington, Del., is a 1959 graduate of King's. He received his law degree from Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law, in Washington , D.C. Since 1970, he has served as Public Defender for the State of Delaware for an unprecedented six consecutive terms.
During his 36-year tenure, Sullivan created the first psycho-forensic evaluation unit of any public defender's office in the nation. He also established the first statewide-integrated videophone system for criminal justice in the nation; this communications system links trial courts, prosecution offices, public defender offices, prison facilities, police agencies, and social service agencies.
In 2006, Sullivan received with the highest national awards a public defender can receive—the American Bar Association's Charles H. Dorsey, Jr. Award and the National Legal Aid and Defender Association's Reginald Heber Smith Award. He is the only person to ever receive both awards.
