39 local national and chapter French contest winners honored at King’s College
May 14, 2009 – The National French Contest, sponsored by the Northeastern Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of French, concluded with 59 chapter and 24 national winners from a pool of nearly 348 elementary to high school student entrants from public and private schools in the Wyoming Valley, Scranton, Pocono, Hazleton, and South Williamsport areas.
Dr. Margaret Corgan, chairperson of the department of foreign languages at King’s, is president of the local chapter and director of the program, which began at King’s in 1969. In that time, more than 24,000 students have registered and taken the test at the College.
Continuing a tradition that began in 1977, King’s College hosted a dinner for area national and chapter French contest winners and guests in the Sheehy-Farmer Campus Center.
Katherine Levandoski, a senior at Wyoming Seminary, won the prestigious Langenscheidt Publishers Award for the student who participated the greatest number of times with the greatest success.
National winners were Level 3A: Mary Jeanne Brenholts, Holy Redeemer High School; Level 01B: Gabrielle Coslett, Alexandra Kilyanek, and Vinay Murthy; Level 1A: Olivea Smialek; Level 1B: Hannah Dressler, Leah Goldberg, Megan Tindell, and Emma Bertram; Level 2A: Sujay Murthy, Gabriel Pascal, Dominique Coslett, Paul DeNaples, Josiah Cottle, Maxim Crispin, and Michael Kim; and, Level 2B: Atalia Dressler, Madison Sweitzer, and Guy Edmunds, all from Wyoming Seminary Lower School; Level 1A: Juliann Merryman; Level 3A: Carly Sokach; Level 5A: Katherine Levandoski; and, Level 2B: Renata O’Donnell, all from Wyoming Seminary.
Chapter winners were: Angelo DeSanto, Crestwood High School; Elsbeth Turcan, Karley Stasko, Victoria Rendina, Jennifer Manganello, Casey Yuscavage, and Joshua Niznik, Holy Redeemer High School; Hunter Hughes, Richard Hughes, Alyssa Joanlanne, Megan Molitoris, and Mairead Tuttle, Wyoming Seminary Lower School; Gregory Barber and Kevin Kopec, Wyoming Seminary; and, Joseph Butkiewicz and Alexandra Miller, Wyoming Valley West Middle School.
