April 28, 2008 - Father Patrick Sullivan, C.S.C, coordinator of the Ethnic Community Outreach program and a member of the sociology department at King’s College, has been named to the steering committee of the Catholic Scholars for Worker Justice. A noted labor rights scholar and practitioner, Sullivan joins scholars from, among others, the Jesuit School of Theology Berkeley, Loyola Law School, Manhattan College, Boston College School of Law, Georgetown University, College of the Holy Cross and the University of Notre Dame on the steering committee. The organization’s mission is to promote Catholic Social Teaching on the rights of workers and the role that unions play in securing justice for workers and their families. Membership is reserved for scholars who are actively engaged in research, teaching and publication of the above principles. The group will collaborate with the Catholic Labor Network, Interfaith Worker Justice, Pax Romana, Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good Network, Pax Christi, The National Center for the Laity and labor unions and other organizations dedicated to social justice. The group publishes scholarly and popular pieces on the rights of workers, conducts research on conflicts between employers and employees and issues statements in support of workers who may be treated unfairly. Sullivan has authored several books on the Catholic Church and labor issues, including “U.S. Catholic Institutions and Labor Unions, 1960-1980” and “Blue Collar-Roman Collar-White Collar: U.S. Catholic Involvement in Labor Management.” This fall, he plans to publish “Labor Priests from 1900 to the 1960s,” the first of three books on the subject of labor priests.
