February 6, 2008 - A blood drive, public lecture and free movie will be three public events during "Campuses that Care" week, to be held February 11 - 15, an annual combined effort by the students and staffs of King's College and Wilkes University to conduct public service activities and bring public attention to relevant social issues. A blood drive will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, February 11, in the ballroom of the Henry Student Center at Wilkes University . People interested in donating blood should call 1-800-GIVELIFE, extension 2150, or register on-line at www.nepagivelife.org. People interested in volunteering for the blood drive should e-mail community.service@wilkes.edu or call 408-3488. King's will host two free public lectures by Sister Helen Prejean, a world-renowned advocate of abolishing the death penalty and author of the best-selling and Pulitzer Prize nominated book, "Dead Man Walking: An Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty in the United States," on Tuesday, February 12. Sister Prejean will discuss her personal experiences and her position as founder of the Moratorium Project, a state-by-state effort to abolish the death penalty, at 3:30 p.m. Feb. 12 in the King's College Theatre, first floor of the Administration Building , and at 7:30 p.m. in the Burke Auditorium of the McGowan School of Business, corner of Union and River streets. The afternoon presentation will be held on the set of the theatre production. King's will also present for the first time in the Wyoming Valley the stage adaptation of Prejean's book at 7:30 p.m. February 13 th through 16 th . In exchange for a canned or non-perishable food item, free admittance will be granted to a screening of "Blood Diamond" at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday, February 13, at Movies 14, Northampton Street , Wilkes-Barre . The title of the movie is subject to change. During the week, combined teams from King's and Wilkes will be completing public service projects for VISION and REACH, the Victim's Resource Center, Kid's Café at Heights Elementary School, Kirby Family House, the VA Hospital the SPCA and The Book Concern. King's College is a Catholic College sponsored by the congregation of Holy Cross. |
