PRIVATE SCHOLARSHIP ANNOUNCEMENTS

New Economy Technology Scholarship (NETS) - Deadline December 31, 2008Established to prepare Pennsylvania Students to succeed in the technology-based economy of the 21st century and to reduce the migration of Pennsylvania's young people to other states.

The SciTech Scholarship and the Technology Scholarship are administered jointly by Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) and the PA Department of Education (PDE).

To qualify, a student must:

1. Be a resident of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

2. Be a high school graduate.

3. Be at least a sophomore who is enrolled as full-time student pursuing a bachelor's degree in an approved science or technology field at an approved Pennsylvania public or private college or university.

4. Have at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at the time of application and maintain at least that average throughout post secondary study.

5. Complete an approved internship or relevant work experience in a field related to the student's major with a Pennsylvania company prior to receiving a degree.

6. Begin employment in the state within one year after completion of studies, one year for each year that the scholarship was awarded.

7. Apply for a Federal Pell Grant and Pennsylvania State Grant.

The scholarship will convert to a loan if a student fails to satisfy the requirements of the eligible program or fails to perform the internship or work obligation.

The Bill Raskob Foundation - Deadline April 1, 2009

A small family foundation set up to give deserving students undergraduate or graduate loans with no interest. The foundation does not award scholarships, grants or gifts.

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Legal U.S. Citizens attending an accredited school in the United States.

2. The foundation does not accept applications for first year undergraduate students.

3. Financial need is given first consideration.

AAPA Veterans Caucus Scholarship - Deadline March 1

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Any Honorably Discharged Veteran of any Uniformed Service of the United States, or active member of the Guard or Reserve of any Uniformed Service of the United States enrolled in Physician Assistant Training at an accredited PA program in the USA;

2. Sons or Daughters of any United States Army Special Forces members (must have SF Regiment designation) may compete for the Chan-Padgett Scholarship. (Applicants for this scholarship must include a scanned DD-214 for the US Army Special Forces member who was their sponsor). Please indicate your submission for this special scholarship in the comments section of the online application.

Application Process:
1.Electronic applications will be accepted after October 1st each year for the following yearly cycle.
2. Deadline for all application material to be submitted electronically is March 1st of each year.
3. Student and faculty advised of selection by May 1st of each year.
4. Scholarship checks mailed to PA Program Director for presentation by May 15th of each year.

Price Chopper Golub Foundation Scholarship - Deadline March 15

Price Chopper's Golub Foundation is offering ten scholarships to students who live within our marketing area. Eight of these scholarships are for graduating high school seniors planning on attending college as fully matriculated students for the Fall 2007 semester.

The Junior College Transfer Scholarship is for a graduate or graduating student of a community or junior college, transferring to a four year college or university, as a Junior, starting the Fall 2007 semester. The Graduate or Professional School scholarship is for a graduating college senior or returning student who is planning on attending graduate school as a fully matriculated, first year graduate student for the Fall 2007 semester.

National Physical Science Consortium: Fellowship with a Future - Deadline November 5

If you aspire to a doctoral degree and a career in the physical sciences, you may be a potential National Physical Science Consortium Fellow.

The NPSC identifies tomorrow's most promising scientists and matches them with employer sponsors who support their doctoral training. During their training period, many Fellows conduct research for their sponsoring organizations and, after receiving their degree, go to work for them.

  • Each fellowship is worth up to $200,000, depending on the university a Fellow attends.
  • Top U.S. agencies, companies and laboratories as well as more than 100 public and private universities participate in the program.
  • Fellowships are open to all eligible students with emphasis on recruiting historically underrepresented minority and women students in the physical sciences and related engineering fields.
  • Applying for an NPSC Fellowship costs nothing.

Glamour's 2008 Top 10 College Women Competition - Deadline November 30, 2007

Eligibility:

Any woman who is currently a full-time junior at an accredited college or university in the United States or Canada for the 2007-2008 academic year is eligible to enter.

A panel of judges will evaluate candidates based on leadership experience, personal involvement in community and campus affairs, and academic excellence. Winners will be notified by March 30, 2008.

The 2007 Frank O' Neill Memorial Scholarship - Deadline December 31, 2007

The 2007 Frank O' Neill Memorial Scholarship is open to anyone attending a university, college, trade school, technical institute, vocational training or other post-secondary education program in the 2007-2008 or 2008-2009 academic year. In addition, eligible students may not have already been receiving or awarded a full-tuition scholarship or waiver from another source. This means that you can not apply if you already have 100% of your school paid for. International students are welcome to apply. Datatel Scholarships - Deadline 5:00pm on January 30, 2009 

Datatel Scholars Foundation scholarship

Eligibility
For outstanding students currently attending an eligible Datatel client institution, the Datatel Scholars Foundation scholarship is open to fulltime and part-time students (taking at least six credit hours), as well as undergraduate and graduate students.

Personal Statement Essay
The Datatel Scholars Foundation scholarship personal statement essay should summarize educational goals and objectives, where the applicant has been as an individual, and where they hope their education will take them. They should also indicate the difference a Datatel scholarship would make in their life and to those around them.

Award Amount
The applications for the Datatel Scholars Foundation scholarship are divided into three groups based on the undergraduate tuition at the college or university the applicant attends.   Each group receives scholarships and the Datatel Scholars Foundation Board of Directors determines the number of scholarships each year. Award amounts for each group are as follows:

Group A - $2,400
Group B - $1,600
Group C - $1,000

For the 2007-2008 academic year awards, 38% of the students who were nominated by their institution won an award. The Foundation awarded 270 Datatel Scholars Foundation scholarships totaling $450,000.

Angelfire scholarship

Eligibility
Honoring soldiers who have served during combat, the Angelfire scholarship is for outstanding student currently attending an eligible Datatel client institution, who served the US military:

  • In the Asian theater ( Vietnam , Cambodia , or Laos ) during the 1964-1975 time-frame.
    • A spouse or child of a Vietnam Veteran, or a refugee from Vietnam , Cambodia , or Laos is also eligible.
    • Proof of Record of Service (Form DD214 or its equivalent) or entry documents (such as an I-94, original Arrival/Departure documents with port-of-entry stamp, travel documents with visa imprints, or Permanent Residency (Green Card) identification) are required for submission.
  • In Operation Desert Storm, Operation Enduring Freedom and/or Operation Iraqi Freedom.
    • Proof of Record of Service(Form DD214 or its equivalent) are required for submission.

The Angelfire scholarship is open to full-time and part-time students (taking at least six credit hours), as well as undergraduate and graduate students.

Personal Statement Essay :
The Angelfire scholarship personal statement essay should discuss how the conflict has affected the applicant personally, summarize how the conflict has impacted their educational goals, and describe how being awarded an Angelfire scholarship will help them achieve their goals.

Award Amount:
The Foundation will award scholarships in the amount of $1,700 to outstanding Angelfire applicants.


Russ Griffith Memorial Scholarship (formerly Returning Student Scholarship)

Eligibility
For outstanding students currently attending an eligible Datatel client institution who have returned to school after an absence of five years or longer 

The Russ Griffith Memorial scholarship is open to full- and part-time students (taking at least six credit hours), as well as undergraduate and graduate students.

Personal Statement Essay :
The Russ Griffith Memorial Scholarship personal statement essay should discuss the impact of being a returning student, the challenges of combining life interests, such as work and family, along with school, and the importance of receiving a this scholarship to help achieve a dream.

Award Amount :
The Foundation will award fifty $2,000 scholarships to outstanding Russ Griffith Memorial scholars.

Nancy Goodhue Lynch scholarship

Eligibility
For outstanding, undergraduate students currently attending an eligible Datatel client institution, who are majoring in an Information Technology-related curriculum program. The applicant will need to indicate their major on their application.

Presidential Forum on Renewable Energy - Deadline February 1, 2008

Nationwide Student Essay Contest

The Presidential Forum on Renewable Energy is sponsoring a student essay contest in which three college students will be named and awarded a $10,000 educational prize. The contest, which begins on November 17 will engage college students in the issues of renewable energy, sustainability, and conservation.

Eligibility:

The contest is open to students who, as of January 1, 2008, are between the ages of 18 and 24; enrolled full-time or part-time, in an undergraduate program; and a citizen of the United States of America .

Submissions will be evaluated on their originality, on their political, economic, and technical feasibility, and on their long-term viability. We will evaluate the plans on the soundness and originality of thinking, but we will also consider the ability to present those ideas in a concise, persuasive, and compelling manner.

David A. Long Scholarship Award Offered by American Water Works Association Pennsylvania Section - Deadline February 1 2008

The Pennsylvania Section of the AWWA encourages study in the fields relating to the water supply industry and financially supports students who have demonstrated academic excellence and good citizenship in pursuing this goal.

Eligibility:

The Fund for Theological Education - Deadline February 1, 2008

FTE offers young adults who may be drawn to religious leadership, a network of support, both financial and relational. The King's College Faculty Scholarship - Deadline February 15, 2008

The King's College Faculty Scholarship is intended to reward and recognize a student's academic achievements and pursuits both inside and outside the classroom. The scholarship is funded entirely by contributions from the faculty of King's College and is awarded annually to a student entering their senior year,

Eligibility:

Must have junior status (60 + credits) and a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50 at the time of application.

Applications should be submitted in person or via campus mail to the chair of the Faculty Scholarship Committee- Dr. Greg Bassham.

A completed application will consist of the following:

  • A current resume. The resume should include the applicant's current GPA, contact information, academic program, and relevant academic and extra-curricular activities.
  • A formal essay. This essay (approximately 750-1000 words) should describe the applicant's philosophy of scholarship and learning, and should illustrate how the applicant's experiences have developed knowledge and skills in the respective academic discipline. The essay should focus on the applicant's academic accomplishments beyond coursework, including but not limited to, research projects, publications, presentations at conferences, grants, internships, service-learning assignments, independent studies, academic awards, and so on. The applicant's essay should also include plans for continued scholarly activity in the senior year and beyond.
  • Contact information for two (2) faculty members of King's College. Letters if support from these references may be requested by the committee to aid in the decision-making process.

After reviewing the applications, the Faculty Scholarship Committee may invite a select number of candidates to interviews. The recipient of the scholarship will be announced at the Honors Convocation and again at the opening faculty meeting in August.


IMA National Scholarship Program-Deadline - February 15, 2008

IMA Memorial Education Fund Scholarships (MEF)

Eligibility:

  • Full and part-time (at least 6 credits)- SCMS scholarship requires at least 12 credits
  • Scholarships are awarded to students who are physically located in the U>S or Puerto Rico , studying at regionally accredited institutions.
  • Student must be a IMA Student Member with the membership number included on the application form
  • The applicant needs to have the expressed intent of pursuing a career on management accounting, financial management, or information
  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 is required between all institutions attended throughout the applicant's undergraduate/graduate academic career.

Sons of Italy Scholarship - Deadline February 28, 2008

Eligibility:

U.S. citizens of Italian descent (at least one Italian or Italian American grandparent) enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at a four-year, accredited academic institution for the Fall 2008 term. Previous SIF scholarship winners are not eligible.

All recipients of the NELA scholarship must be in a matriculated program of study either on the undergraduate or graduate level.

Requirements:

1. Cover Sheet : Cover sheet should include the following, in this order: Name, Address, Home & School Phone and Email. Identify Italian Lineage by surname referencing whether mother or father's family. State your academic level for the Fall 2007 and list the scholarships you are applying for. Send with self-addressed, stamped, standard business-size envelope for acknowledgment of application.

2. Official Transcripts : Submit one official transcript from each academic institution attended through December 2006. All transcripts must be stamped by the institution and included in a separate, sealed envelope. You may submit transcripts with entire application package, however, we understand some schools prefer to send them separately.

  • High school students: transcripts should include class rank and GPA.
  • Undergraduates: submit high school and undergraduate transcripts.
  • Graduates: submit undergraduate and graduate transcripts. If your first year as a graduate student is fall 2007, please specify.

2008 Lighthouse International Scholarships - Deadline February 28, 2008

Eligibility:

Applicants must be legally blind. Scholarships are based on academic and other achievements and candidates are not required to demonstrate financial need. Must be a U.S. citizen and previous winners are not eligible. There are four different categories of scholarships available, each are $5,000.

Members 1st Federal Credit Union/ Robert P. Reagan 2007 Scholarship - Deadline March 1, 2008

Members 1st awards four $1,000 renewing scholarships each year to provide students with financial assistance toward post-secondary education.

Requirements

In order to qualify for a scholarship, the applicant must be enrolled or accepted as a full-time undergraduate student at any institution recognized by the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency. The scholarship is for undergraduate students only. Students must maintain a 2.5 grade point average (GPA) each year in order to renew their scholarship. It is the student's responsibility to provide proof of GPA to Members 1st in the form of an annual official transcript. The renewal of the scholarship will be granted for four years (freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior years). If your undergraduate studies extend beyond four years, scholarship money will not be granted. The scholarship cannot be used for graduate programs. An applicant must have an account in his or her own name; must remain a primary member of the credit union in good standing; must be a high school senior or graduate; and must agree to and abide by the terms of the application. Associates, volunteers and interns of Members 1st Federal Credit Union and their family members are not eligible to apply.

Selection

Applications will be sent collectively to the Selection Committee after March 1, 2008. Judging is based on academic achievement (GPA, scholastic honors and awards), extracurricular activities, work experience, and the written essay. The essay is judged on content, creativity, and clarity. Additionally, grammatical and spelling errors will disqualify your entry. Scholarship winners will be notified personally by May 1, 2008. Non-winners will not be contacted. Winners are asked to submit a photo for publication in our membership newsletter. Awards are presented in the student's name and are sent to the winners prior to the fall semester.

AES Engineers Scholarship - Deadline September 15

How to Apply
Students must submit an essay of no more than 1000 words in answer to one of the two questions below:

1. An object in motion tends to stay in motion in the same direction unless acted upon by an external force. Tell us about an external influence (a person, an event, etc) that affected you and how it caused you to change direction.

2. Explain what you have done to make your community a better place to live. Give examples of specific projects in which you have been involved over time.

The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation - Deadline March 3, 2008

Scholarships range annually from $500-$10,000.

Eligibility:

  • be a son or a daughter of a Marine on active duty or in the Reserve, retired or deceased
  • be a son or a daughter of a Marine or Marine Reservist who has received an Honorable Discharge, Medical Discharge, or who was killed while in the service of our country
  • be a son or a daughter of an active duty, reserve, or former U.S. Navy Corpsman who is serving or has served, with the U.S. Marine Corps

The Point Foundation, The National LGBT Scholarship Fund - Deadline March 1

For individuals who have proven leadership skills, excellent scholastic achievements and those who want to make a difference in the world. All applicants are evaluated on the totality of their situation including, academic accomplishments, financial, emotional and social need, extracurricular activities, personal circumstances and goals for the future.

All levels of education can apply for funds whether you are a high-school student getting ready for your first year in college or you are writing your second PhD thesis.

The Point Foundation REQUIRES an Online Application and supplemental materials to complete your application.  Those materials include the following:

a. At least two (2) and no more than three (3) Letters of Recommendation. Two should be from a teacher/professor.  For applicants who have been out of school for more than five years a reference from a supervisor could serve as one of the letters of recommendation.

b. Official school transcripts from your most recent academic institution supporting the GPA you entered on your application.

c. Your resume and/or CV (Optional)

American Chemical Society Scholarship - Deadline March 1

The scholarship is designed to encourage African-American, Hispanic, and Native American students to pursue undergraduate college degrees in the chemical sciences.

The American Chemical Society Scholars Program will award approximately 100 scholarships to undergraduate students interested in four-year degrees in the chemical sciences; those interested in transferring from two-year colleges to four-year colleges to pursue chemical science degrees; and to two-year students intending to pursue degrees in chemical technology. High school seniors who will be entering college are also eligible. The scholarship is valued at up to $2500 per academic year for freshman and up to $3000 per academic y ear for sophomores and up to $5000 per academic year for juniors and seniors.

A chemical science degree includes the fields of chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, environmental science and toxicology. For those chemical science specialties no listed, there must be a strong component of chemistry included in the program in order to meet our definition of chemical science.

The HCF Scholarship Programs - Deadline March 15

The Hispanic College Fund awards scholarships based on both merit and financial need. HCF administers multiple scholarship programs including the Sallie Mae Fund's First in My Family Scholarship Program and the ALPFA Scholarship Program.

The minimum eligibility criteria for HCF scholarship programs are:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident residing in the United States
  • Must be studying full-time in the United States or Puerto Rico
  • Must have a minimum GPA of a 3.0

John Heinz Institute Auxiliary- Rose Brader Scholarship Fund - Deadline March 17, 2008

The John Heinz Institute Auxiliary, in 1990 established the Rose Brader Scholarship Fund to contribute to the health care needs of the community, by encouraging and providing financial assistance to those who wish to pursue an education in or seek advanced training in the field if rehabilitation medicine. The Fund is named in honor of Rose Brader, a former Director of Volunteer Services at the John Heinz Institute, who was an outstanding community leader with a strong commitment to the advancement of rehabilitation medicine.

The Fund is offering on $1,000.00 scholarship and two $500.00 scholarships to Luzerne County residents who are pursuing an education in Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Recreation Therapy, or Speech Therapy at an undergraduate or graduate and to nurses seeking advanced education and certification in rehabilitation medicine. Winning a scholarship neither mandates nor guarantees employment at the John Heinz Institute.

Eligibility:

  • Resident of Luzerne County
  • Senior in high school and a candidate for a bachelor, master's degree or post graduate studies in the areas mentioned above.

He or she will be judged on the following: scholastic achievement, demonstrated interest in rehabilitation medicine, financial need and references. A personal interview, for finalists only, are required.

Appalachian Health Care Human Resources Society Scholarship - Deadline March 29, 2008

The Appalachian Health Care Human Resources Society, an organization comprised of over 100 Human Resources professionals from the Central Pennsylvania region, is once again offering scholarships to individuals majoring in Human Resources or a related field. This scholarship is established in memory of Dean Stultz and Samuel Griggs, former members of the society.

Applicants must be majoring in Human Resources (or a related field), in at least their junior year of study and enrolled in an accredited college or university located within Pennsylvania . Graduate students majoring in Human Resources are eligible as well.

NHSC Scholarships - Deadline March 30

The NHSC offers a competitive scholarship program designed for students committed to providing primary health care in communities of greatest need. Scholarship recipients serve where they are most needed upon completion of their training.

The program offers the following benefits for up to 4 years of education:

  • Payment of tuition and fees
  • Twelve monthly stipend payments per year of scholarship support
  • Payment of other reasonable educational expenses, such as books, supplies, and equipment

Note: Starting January 1, 2002, NHSC scholarship awards for tuition, fees, and other reasonable expenses will be exempt from Federal tax. The stipend portion remains taxable. Dental Scholars may do residencies in general practice or pediatric dentistry.

The Northern Tier Hardwood Association of Pennsylvania is offering two $500 scholarships to students majoring in forest management, forest products, or a closely related field. Horvat Scholarship Fund - Deadline April 30, 2008
                 
Requirements:

Students must have a declared science major. By science students, it is meant a field of study in chemistry, physics, biology, the life sciences, or some other related major leading to a career in the medical or health profession.

Financial Needs- family income of qualifying students cannot exceed amounts set by Trustees. Current income limitations are: $64,079 for one dependent, $67,920 for two dependents, and $71, 695 for three or more dependents.

Residency- students must reside in Duryea or within certain surrounding areas specific under the foundation rules.

Grades- high school students must maintain grades which fall within the top 10% of their class, college students must maintain grades which qualify them for the Dean's List.

Independent students- Graduate students who no longer live with their parents may apply as independent students.  There are specific guidelines to request independent status.  Please contact Wachovia Trust to request a copy of the deadlines.

Koster Insurance 2008 Health Careers Scholarship Program - Deadline May 9, 2008

Each scholarship recipient is selected by the Scholarship Program Board of Directors, and each recipient both demonstrates and exceeds the program standards, which include: a strong motivation to pursue a healthcare career, academic excellence, a dedication to community service, and a need for financial support of their education.

Eligibility:

Frank O' Neill Memorial Scholarship

The 2006 Frank O' Neill Memorial Scholarship is open to anyone attending a university, college, trade school, technical institute, vocational training or other post-secondary education program in the 2006-2007 or 2007-2008 academic year. The Vanguard Scholarship Program

The Vanguard Scholarship Program provides merit-based scholarships of up to $10,000 to minority students entering their senior year of college during the 2007-2008 school year. Applicants must be pursuing studies in business, finance, economics, accounting, information technology, or liberal arts.

Applicants of The Vanguard Scholarship Program must:

  • Be entering their senior year of college in the 2007-2008 school year.
  • Be a member of a racial minority.
  • Be enrolled full-time* at an accredited four-year college or university in the United States .
  • Have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident of the United States .

The Boston Realty Advisors Scholarship is a $500 grant designed for students concentrating in Real Estate or planning to become involved in the Real Estate Sector- this can include owning property for investment purposes. The Anne Ford Scholarship

The Anne Ford Scholarship is a $10,000 award given to a high school senior with an identified learning disability (LD) who will be pursuing an undergraduate degree.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria
The National Center for Learning Disabilities, Inc. (NCLD) is seeking applicants for the Anne Ford Scholarship, which is available to students of high merit with an identified learning disability (LD) in public or private secondary schools. To be eligible for the Anne Ford Scholarship, an applicant must:

  • Have an overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher
  • Have demonstrated financial need
  • Show documentation of an identified learning disability
    Note: ADD/ADHD alone is not considered a learning disability; eligible candidates with ADD/ADHD must also provide documentation of a specific learning disability
  • Be a U.S. Citizen
  • Be enrolled as a senior in high school with the intention of pursuing a 4-year undergraduate degree

Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund

The Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund® benefits financially needy dependent children, spouses, and domestic partners (1) of 9/11 victims, including airplane crew and passengers, World Trade Center and Pentagon workers and visitors, and relief workers, including firefighters, emergency medical personnel, and law enforcement personnel.

Families of Freedom Scholarships are available for children, including those born after September 11, 2001, who enroll in a program of postsecondary study by age 24. Those children who turn 24 during their course of study must then continue their program of study uninterrupted, with the exception of summer vacations, in order to continue receiving scholarship assistance. Spouses and domestic partners may apply for Families of Freedom scholarships through 2012. 

Scholarships may be used to attend an accredited vocational-technical school, trade school, two-year college, four-year college, or university located in the United States.  Families of Freedom Scholarship recipients may receive scholarship awards for up to four years, or the equivalent if attendance is part-time, depending on total funding available.  Funds are available for undergraduate study only.
