STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM - STUDENT EXPERIENCES

Melanie Makuta
Political Science/ History Major
Class of 2006
Irish-American Scholars Program
Queen's University
Belfast, Northern Ireland

How did you select your Study Abroad location?

I found about the location through the Irish-American Scholars Program.

Why did you want to study abroad?

I wanted to try something new and exciting. The opportunity to travel and study abroad was worthwhile and I knew I couldn't pass it up.

What was the highlight of the experience?

There were many highlights to studying abroad. First and foremost, I had to adapt to a different culture and lifestyle that was interesting and a learning venture. Second, I traveled to Scotland , London , England , Rome , Italy , and Berlin , Germany while I was studying at Queen's University! I met so many interesting people in each place that traveling like this felt like a dream come true.

What surprised you the most?

I could not believe how well I got adjusted once I arrived. I was never on an airplane before and going to a different country, by myself, taught me how to survive on my own. I learned to be responsible, manage my money, and live on my own without any of my comfort zones.

How has this experience affected your major and future career?

My course studies at Queen's University helped me to realize that the political world is definitely something that I want to pursue further.

What would you tell students considering studying abroad?

If you have even the slightest desire to study abroad, take the leap and go for it because I promise you won't regret it!
