STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM - STUDENT EXPERIENCES

Morgana Kinlan
Neuroscience Major
Class of 2008
School for International Training
Reykjavik & West Fjords, Iceland

How did you select your Study/Intern Abroad location?

I wanted to go somewhere exotic, and I was also interested in studying science. Iceland offered both of those things.

Why did you want to study or intern abroad?

I wanted to see the world through a new perspective. I was curious about the outlook of another culture, and I wanted to travel.

What was the highlight of the experience?

There were many wonderful experiences throughout my trip, but I'd have to say that the students that were in my program were what really made the trip special. Our group dynamic was so comfortable and easygoing; by the end of the trip I felt like I had known the rest of the students forever.

What surprised you the most?

I was surprised by some of the subtle differences between Icelandic culture and our own. Case in point; Icelanders don't like peanut butter. At first I was struck by how American Icelandic culture was, but as time went by I was able to get a sense of what made Icelandic culture unique.

How has (or how might) this experience affect your major and future career?

Studying abroad has given me a different perspective towards my college experience. It has made me re-evaluate the way that I spend my time and the activities to which I devote the majority of my energy. I feel like I shouldn't waste my time pursuing things that I don't enjoy; and that I needed to take a step back and think about what it was that I wanted.

What would you tell students considering studying or interning abroad?

I would say that studying over the summer is a great alternative for students who are very involved in activities throughout the school year. You can still have a great study abroad experience and then step right back into the school routine without having missed anything.
