STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM - STUDENT EXPERIENCES

Leigh Ann Kemmerer
Environmental Science
Class of 2008
School for Field Studies
Australia & New Zealand

How did you select your Study/Intern Abroad location?

I have always wanted to go to Australia and the rainforest, so when the opportunity came up for a field based course, I knew where I wanted to go.

Why did you want to study or intern abroad?

Studying abroad allowed me a chance to keep getting credits while seeing the other side of the world and to gain more experience in my field. Also, when building a resume, a study abroad experience shows future employers that I was willing to go above and beyond to gain knowledge in my major.

What was the highlight of the experience?

There was no one particular highlight to my trip. Everyday was a highlight. The fact that I was in New Zealand and Australia was the best part.

What surprised you the most?

How similar the forests' ecosystems function compared to ours, even though they were completely different types of forests.

How has (or how might) this experience affect your major and future career?

This experience allowed me specify my likes and dislikes so I am better able to focus where in my field I fit best. Also, knowing what to look for makes searching for a career easier.

What would you tell students considering studying or interning abroad?

DO IT!!! It was one of the greatest experiences of my life that I will never forget and learned so much from.
