STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM - STUDENT EXPERIENCES
Laura Bonin How did you select your Study/Intern Abroad location? I wanted an experience different from the norm and my church supports with a missionary family in Guatemala. They helped me find an excellent language program. Why did you want to study or intern abroad? My main reason for studying abroad was to increase language fluency. After 4 years in high school and 2 years in college language classes, I was disappointed that I couldn't understand a native speaker's Spanish. I decided to immerse myself so I would have no choice but to learn to speak and comprehend. What was the highlight of the experience? I couldn't narrow down all my highlights into one best experience. I increased my language abilities, made amazing friends, traveled all over the country, and learned a lot about myself. What surprised you the most? I was surprised that the trip changed me so much, personally and emotionally. After living in such a poor country, I learned to appreciate all the advantages I have as an American; many others can only dream of these opportunities. However, I also realized the power of living a simple life; happiness does not come from wealth. When I left Guatemala, the culture shock was so strong because I didn't want to leave. I don't think I ever would have believed that one day I would rather live in a third-world country than the U.S. How has (or how might) this experience affect your major and future career? My study abroad experience showed me that I have a passion for the Latino culture and directed me into choosing a career path in which I can develop my language abilities. I currently work as an interpreter/ESL teacher for the Luzerne County Careerlink. In the future, I hope to have a career in international relations. What would you tell students considering studying or interning abroad? Studying abroad is an excellent opportunity, not only to see the world, but to change how you see the world. Such an experience helps you to leave everything that you know behind and look at life from someone else's perspective. Every student would benefit from spending time abroad and should consider it for their own studies. |
