STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM - STUDENT EXPERIENCES
Kerri Scheib How did you select your Study/Intern Abroad location? I wanted to go somewhere unusual. I looked into a few countries where the language, culture, and even the alphabet were completely different. After doing some research I chose Greece because of its ancient history, proud people, and amazing landscape. I also chose this location because the program allowed us to live among the Greek people and become part of their culture versus living in a school setting. Also the program was always on location. We never had a day in a classroom; rather we traveled to the site and learned first hand. Why did you want to study or intern abroad? I had always wanted to study abroad and travel. I feel studying in a different country allows students valuable lessons they cannot learn in the United States . It teaches tolerance to different beliefs, exposes them to diverse cultures, helps them be more responsible and self sufficient, and also breaks down barriers of ignorance. By meeting different people, students can expand their knowledge and understanding of the world. Overall it makes them more cultured, accepting, and less ignorant. These lessons are important for any career or future endeavors. What was the highlight of the experience? The highlight of my experience was making friends with many of my neighbors. The Greek people were very warm and welcoming. The day before our departure a local restaurant, whose owner was a good friend of ours, invited my housemates and me for dinner to say goodbye. Even though the whole trip was a highlight, this moment sticks in my mind because it says so much about the culture and people. What surprised you the most? The Greek people. I knew before I left that things would be different; however I was not as prepared for the culture as I thought. In general they are a very open and relaxed people. It is not uncommon to be invited in for some cold water and treats or to celebrate family festivities during your travels. They are more than willing to tell you all about their culture. Also the forward, romantic nature of the young gentlemen will make any young girl feel beautiful, like a Greek goddess. The difference in lifestyle and culture was the greatest shock to me, yet it was also the greatest experience. How has (or how might) this experience affect your major and future career? This experience has helped me understand the world as a whole, and not as my small town, state or country. It has helped me look into the global system of healthcare and has allowed me to look into offering my future career and a physician's assistant to countries in need. What would you tell students considering studying or interning abroad? Do it. Though at first it may seem a little scary, it is something you'll never forget. You'll meet so many different and wonderful people and also be able to see amazing sights and locations. Not many students can say they were at the Coliseum, Taj Mahal, or the Royal Palace in London . I think every student should go abroad. It'll be one of the greatest moments in your life and you'll forever have regret if you choose not to go. |
