STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM - STUDENT EXPERIENCES

James Donovan
Business Administration Major
Class of 2008
University College Cork
Cork, Ireland

How did you select your Study Abroad location?

I selected to study in Cork , Ireland , because I've always been interested in the country because of my heritage.  Cork was a good choice because my family is from the county, and it is a great city in which to experience Irish life without falling into many of the tourist pitfalls.  The city was small enough to avoid tourist traps, but large enough to find all the comforts of home while living life as an Irishman.

Why did you want to study abroad?

I looked at colleges specifically with good Study Abroad Programs because I always knew I wanted to study abroad in Ireland .  King's has a great relationship with a terrific study abroad program, which made the whole process very easy.  If I had to pay for college anyway, why not travel the world while I did it?  Studying abroad was a once in a lifetime opportunity!

What was the highlight of the experience?

I could not pinpoint one specific highlight of my experience because the whole trip was exactly what I had hoped.  However, if I were to choose one thing, I would have to say all the people I met made it great.  I had roommates from Massachusetts , Connecticut , and Spain .  I had people in my program from all over the country.  Plus, I had class everyday with Irish students.  The opportunity to meet all these people was just an added bonus to a great experience.

What surprised you the most?

I think I was surprised by the fact that life is so similar to living here.  People only think of Ireland as fields of green and little farmhouses, which is still true and a nice attribute of the country, but there are big houses, and shopping centers, and crazy traffic circles just like our area.

How has this experience affected your major and future career?

My experience did not really affect my major because I am a Business Administration major and because of King's international accreditation it is very hard to transfer in credits.  Most of my classes went towards my Core credits.

What would you tell students considering studying abroad?

If anyone was considering studying abroad, I would definitely recommend it.  College is the perfect opportunity for someone to travel and see the world.  It gives great insight into the way the world works from a unique point of view.
